THIS IS A HUGE ACHIEVEMENT:

The EU now generates more electricity from wind and solar than from fossil fuels.

Bad news for climate. Based on daily data, August's average of atmospheric CO₂ concentration was ~423.0 ppm, that's around 3.3 ppm higher than last year: another big jump!
Corrected for the seasonal effect, we're now well above 425 ppm.

Graph showing daily, weekly, and monthly data for August 2023 - August 2024. The average over August 2024 - a month of steep seasonal decline - was still around 423 ppm.

Yes heat pumps work in very old buildings.

Here's an 11th century Norman church in Lympne, Kent that has been fitted with a heat pump.

My own 1880 Victorian house had a heat pump fitted in 2019 and it works very well.

More on why heat pumps work in old buildings in my piece here 👇

So it's collapsing, because it murdered its culture of excellence. And once you destroy a culture, it won't come back: kind of like the coral reefs we're blithely slaughtering every year with our pollution.

What's most telling is that Boeing's executives are *totally, honestly nonplussed* by what's happening. It's a combination of "why are these passengers so worried about planes falling apart?" and "it seems impossible to not build planes that might fall apart."

No silver bullet, but silver buckshot: #climate policies most effective when combined. Successful approaches often use stick & carrot eg. carbon taxes + renewables subsidies. Large emissions reduction is possible if we want it!

I maintain an Android app that doesn't get any new features. I still have to keep upgrading it once in a while. The amount of deprecations I have to deal with is crazy. It takes a day each time I touch the app to just get it working with the latest Android Studio. I am not even fixing any bugs or adding features. All this running just to stay in the same place.

Now ask me if I will consider using cloud platform services from the same company that's responsible for Android.

Remember:

1. Our oceans are dying.
2. Forests are vanishing rapidly.
3. Fertile soil is diminishing.
4. Megafauna face extinction.
5. Insect populations are plummeting.
6. Plastic is infiltrating our bloodstreams.

Yet, none of this makes front-page news.
