Imagine a publishing house with the mission of making knowledge and insights available to everybody for free, while ensuring high standards.

Well, the three universities of Berlin and the Charité have now joined forces to do just that.

They founded "Berlin Universities Publishing". Neither authors not readers pay. The pdf of books are freely available under a Creative Commons licence.

It's called "Diamond Open Access". They're just starting up. Much more to come.

However, I stumbled upon `pymgl` (https://github.com/brendan-ward/pymgl) which can render maplibre maps in high resolution (not as vector graphics though; on the plus side, the styles can be customized quite easily).

Today we're releasing WEBCAT, a set of open-source tools that enables tamper-proof web applications.

This is a major milestone on the path to the next generation of SecureDrop, to provide trustworthy browser-based encryption.

@axbom Am I reading it correctly that they are only talk about server-side encryption here? I think that could be more explicit in the beginning. The spam filtering/virus scanning of course (partly) still applies to end-to-end encryption.

The value increases with distance though. In interpolation it typically gets closer to the reference value the smaller the distance.

The problem with normal journals is that some idiot reviewer will always blindly suggest (require) bigger evaluations without really engaging with what that would mean practically.

This tanks the paper and buries the results. Hence, only the big teams get to be part of the conversation.

An intermediate venue where you get to make weak claims based on small evaluations would allow the smaller labs and solo authors much more of a foothold.

Während die Zensur der gehosten Version im jedem Fall zu problematisieren ist, sei angemerkt, dass DeepSeek (im Gegensatz zu "Open"AI) die Parameter des Modells öffentlich zu Verfügung stellt. Führt man das Modell selber aus, ist die Zensur (so wird berichtet) zumindest deutlich abgeschwächt. Ob die freie Verfügbarkeit etwas Positives ist, ist allerdings sicher auch eine Frage der Perspektive.
