Here's how the "Ship of Theseus" page looked in July 2003 when it was first created! Since then, the article has been edited 1792 times. 0% of its original phrases remain.

A Wikipedia page for Ship of Theseus is shown. The article reads "According to an ancient Greek legend, Theseus had a warship that was preserved as a historical relic by the Athenians. Some of its boards rotted and had to be replaced. After many, many years, many such replacements occurred. Eventually, none of the original boards were present. Philosophers could then debate whether it was the same ship that Theseus had used, and if not, when it had ceased to be so.
A modern embellishment
If Theseus paid a nontransferable fee, allowed to be used for only one ship, for the privilege of docking in a particular harbor, would he violate the non-transferability of his license if repeated replacement of boards eventually had the result described above?"

@jeffcarlson Is there a way to reorder the iPhone’s photographic styles? If I want to toggle between Standard and Stark B&W while shooting, then it seems like I have to swipe through 8 useless (to me at the time) options every time. I want those two to be side-by-side.

@gruber All that to say: I think I see the market Humane hopes it can create (and I’m not even old enough to appreciate a book about classic arcade game fonts). Like you, however, I’m not convinced they’ll be successful in this endeavor; I don’t see how I could give up my shared photo library, password storage, FaceTime calling, and other very screen-dependent features I rely on my phone for daily. But I am certainly open to hearing them make a case.

2023-04-22

@gruber I have been trying for a while to pare back my screen time to just the bare essentials so that I can feel less pressure to be constantly “productive” and to be a better social participant (both at home and standing in line at the grocery store). I’m clearly not alone given the apparent demand for screen time tracking (and limiting) features that are now available baked into iOS.

Sure, I love my device, but I hate that it owns my (and our collective) attention outright.

2023-04-22

@gruber It’s not often I disagree with your take on tech, but I bristled at the highlighted bit in your latest post.

Rather than a willing choice, I think instead we are compelled to consume information from our phones any time we have a few free seconds because our brains want to chase easy dopamine hits, and modern tech keeps making those hits more readily available. I don’t think that constant chasing feedback loop is healthy or sustainable for humanity in the long run.

Text from Daring Fireball: But the notion of even a single trip to the grocery store without a phone to provide (unlimited!) material to read or watch while I wait at the checkout line seems like veritable torture to me now.

My daughter, who has had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this observation about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen:

Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again:
When you enter text into it, you're asking "What would a response to this sound like?"
If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing!
But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is* doing something else.
It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation.

@EricCarroll I might take you up on that, thanks. Congrats making it so far through their curriculum!

@EricCarroll Thank you! It ended up the timing won’t work out for their upcoming session, but I’ll be tempted to try future offerings. I’m coming back to this style of practice after some time away and realizing how much I’ve missed it. Definitely hoping to reengage with the community!

@EricCarroll Hey, I’m contemplating signing up for the next Pathways session this summer. I take it you had a good experience? Anything you wish you would’ve known beforehand?

Some people haven’t yet figured out that Mastodon only needs to be big enough to support a community, not big enough to support a VC-funded rocket ride to an IPO.

Very very different success criteria
