A NASA astronaut has captured an electrifying image of Earth from space, featuring a gigantic, jellyfish-shaped "sprite" of red lightning shooting upwards above a thunderstorm in North America. The rare phenomenon is still poorly understood, despite being studied for more than 30 years.

America summed up in one poster.

EDIT: please read the comments in this thread regarding juvenile diabetes. A lot of misconceptions have been brought to light and I think it’s important to admit when we don’t know as much as we thought we did.

Thank you again to all of those who corrected me without being insulting. Learning is always a good thing.

This image shows a promotional sign, likely inside a KFC restaurant, advertising a large Pepsi soft drink called a “Mega Jug” for $2.99.

The sign says:
“Complete Your Meal With A Mega Jug — for only $2.99”

Below the drink image, it states:
“And KFC Will Donate $1.00 To JDRF” (which stands for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation — this is spelled out in a small box next to the acronym).

At the bottom, it says in big red letters:
“Help Us Find A Cure!”

The irony here is that it’s promoting a giant sugary soda, which contributes to diabetes risk, while claiming that a portion of the sale will go to a diabetes research foundation.

Stumbled upon an old project of mine from 2019: A bitmap display using resistors and thermochromic paint.

It kinda worked, but the heat builds up over time resulting in slower and slower "refresh" times. The concept is probably better suited for a slow-motion application like a clock.

“You want fantasy? Here’s one... There's this
species that lives on a planet a few miles
above molten rock and a few miles below a
vacuum that'd suck the air right out of them.
They live in a brief geological period
between ice ages, when giant asteroids have
temporarily stopped smacking into the
surface. As far as they can tell, there’s
nowhere else in the universe where they
could stay alive for ten seconds.

And what do they call their fragile little slice
of space and time? They call it real life. In a
universe where it is known that whole
galaxies can explode, they think there’s
things like ‘natural justice’ and ‘destiny’.
Some of them even believe in democracy...
I'm a fantasy writer, and even I find it all a
bit hard to believe.”

Not Japan-related, but since we all need a distraction from The Horrors, Takaya Suzuki points out a study that examined 408 sleeping cats and found the majority (65%) curl leftwards.

I'm not sure how useful this information is, but...it's yours now.

💥💥 Double detonation!

For the first time, astronomers have obtained visual evidence that a star met its end by blasting twice.

This was done by studying the centuries-old remains of supernova SNR 0509-67.5 with our Very Large Telescope. Led by the Univ. of South Wales, this shows some of the most important explosions in the Universe in a new light.

What happened exactly? Keep reading.
