" As the subreddit blackout begins, I wanted to say thank you from the <’ bottom of my heart to the Reddit community and everyone standing up Announcement <B Hey all, Watching many subreddits go dark for tomorrow's blackout, I just wanted to say it's been so incredibly amazing seeing the whole Reddit community come together over a common frustration for how Reddit handled the announcement around changes to API pricing. As one of the many developers of third-party apps, I've been floored by the support, people I haven't talked to in years have reached out for condolences, and users of Apollo have been flooding my inboxes with the kindest things. It truly, truly means a lot. I've had a lot of uneasiness this week, and the warmth from people has been honestly like a blanket. I knew it would be hard on me, but commiserating with others who the app matters a lot to as well has been really nice. Further, I really hope Reddit listens. I think showing humanity through apologizing for and recognizing that this process was handled poorly, and concrete promises to give developers more time, would go a long way to making people feel heard and instilling community confidence. Minor steps can make a potentially massive difference. Outside of that, keep fighting the good fight and thanks again. No better community on the internet exists, and if this is it for all of us, it's been an absolute pleasure. - Christian

@codybrom it's not just about the cost of the API usage but also the restriction of NSFW content to be only viewed with the official app.

@atomicpoet I think some clients might support different views of communication.
For example if use something like Reddit I want a different ui then if I use Mastodon.

I know it is not going to resonate much with people in English speaking countries, but this has been a major issue for people who use alphabets with special characters (my native Czech included).

For years #PDF viewers on #Linux such as #Evince couldn't save characters outside the basic charsets in PDF forms. It turned out to be a complex problem and multi-year effort, but it's finally done and you can use unicode in PDF forms. First available in #Fedora 37 where we've already backported it.

@codonell I wonder a about the timeline about such depredations. Removing fgrep and egrep in the close future sounds like a bad idea because changing every kind of script or any other automation will take long. Keeping the symlink/wrappers around doesn't sound to difficult either.

@ram while I understand the problem I want to add that there's no the package manager on rpm based distributions.
Over the years some have come and gone.
The dominant ones are now zypper and dnf.
It's similar to dpkg although in this case there's only really apt.

@ralf @philheppenstall @furbyonsteroids to that point, could you shut off new subscribers and slowly remove problematic accounts? I imagine maintaining larger instances would require more powerful moderation tools and more moderators, similar to Reddit communities. I do hope Mozilla helps develop these tools for Mastodon, but in the meantime, go small? I'd be sad to lose home.social!

The meme of Peter Parker who looks without his glasses and who sees many web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, Firefox, etc) and when he puts his glasses back on all the browsers are replaced by just Chrome and Firefox.

@calebccff I think static linking and libraries being to much spilt into different pieces causes this.
Instead of having fewer libraries with stable interfaces.

FreeDesktop dark style preference winning again. 💪

Now elementary OS, GNOME, KDE, GTK, Qt, Firefox, Chrome, and more all support the cross-desktop preference I proposed and championed. Good work, everyone!

Today I asked my self how to insert quotation marks in front of text in #emacs #Gnus, turns out there's a simple function for that:
Select region
C-x r t > RET

Sometimes solutions to problems are so simple that can't come up with the right question yourself.
