@rms wow.. holy shit. I was sure the turnout in #election2024 would be a U.S. record. It’s kind of a relieving, actually. Because I was overwhelmed by what I thought was a wave of new assholes in the country. When in fact every asshole voted while the dems slacked off.

@rms It’s a surprising recommendation in the end: to consume local news. Is that it? It’s hard to see how that will make the slightest dent.

There needs to be a campaign to get liberals off #Facebook, #Twitter, and the like. When #CambridgeAnalytica sabotaged #election2016, there should have been a mass exodus from FB. The underlying problem is whatever prevented that from happening, which is likely addiction.

@rms @unplugged New development: #flixbus has started blocking Tor, thus adding a bit more KYC to the identity requirements as it forces people to disclose their IP address.

@stefan @codeDude @uexo @debacle Thanks for the details. I insist on OMEMO so if the experimental MAM stuff is a problem w/omemo, i'll just try logging and history and see how that goes.

@codeDude @uexo @debacle I’ll have to take a look but I think I recall that the debian stable version is too far behind for that.

(edit) I see the option is available in my version now so I'll give it a go. Thanks!

@debacle
I’ve not tried gajim. Not sure if I want to bring yet another app into the mix to add to the complexity, confuse my correspondents, & frustrate the tech illiterates with more bugs. They are already at the edge of their tolerance. In principle I prefer Profanity (TUI) but Profanity loses the history. So I have to keep dino around because it reliably keeps the history by saving a decrypted local copy of everything.

@debacle That setting is not what you think it is. That’s to manage the other user’s keys. The app-wide prefs (☰ on the left sidebar) has no encryption settings.

The padlock icon is gray even when unlocked & off to the far right of the msg bar. It defaults to unlocked & there is no way to chg the default. You can toggle it & it should stick, but I got burnt because it did not stick for some reason. After a few long chats I discovered everything I sent was in the clear. A jawdropping wtf moment.

@dequbed @bootblackcub XMPP seems to be wholly Cloudflare-free. There are Matrix instances that proxy via #Cloudflare, including the flagship instance. For me that’s sufficient to avoid Matrix even if your instance does not use CF. It’s a minefield. XMPP does not use HTTP so it’s Cloudflare immune.

@debacle
I must say ppl are getting burnt w/ #Dino. #DinoIM defaults to e2ee *disabled* for every channel/room. And the padlock is *very* subtle. You get no warning if you send something in the clear. No indicator. I have been burnt a few times by that.

A bug report was opened 4 years ago. It should be urgent but still no progress. I have had lengthy private 1-on-1 discussions then discovered days later that the whole conversation was in the clear.

@bethsawin Kind of. You would certainly have GDPR protections as well as the national protections of whatever nation you choose.

But in terms of Mastodon specifically I have doubts because the GDPR specifically protects “personal data” of individuals and clearly not anonymous data. Mastodon accounts do not identify people, so I think they are all legally considered anonymous (even if you reveal your real name on the account).

@LydiaConwell If you are asking more about connection speed, you can assign a less common channel your network. I think most routers default to channel 6 or something. Some apps will show you the channels of each of the networks in range. If you pick one your neighbors are not using it will cut down interference.

@LydiaConwell Deleting the other wi-fi connection profiles makes no difference at all unless you have the passwords to the other networks and it is attempting to connect to them first. If that’s the case, you can delete the passwords (using the “forget” function) and it will not try again. There are also some apps which enable to you specify a refined priority so it first tries the network that you prioritize.

@TheEffekt @alan @ned
This is very disturbing because there is nothing you can do about /other people/ writing letters to you using #Microsoft Word.

Most gov agencies use MS for #email. MS snoops on all email in both directions. My counter attack has been snail mail. I use LaTeX to write letters. But the gov staff likely uses MS Word to write their responses.

WTF.. how can I escape this?

@rms Also note Article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (#UDHR):

“1. Everyone has the right to a nationality.
2. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to
change his nationality.”

@rms Also interesting to note #UHaul feeds E.Joe Shoen who then feeds #Trump¹. So folks might want to boycott U-Haul. 1. forbes.com/sites/michelatinder

@fdlamotte @askfedi @unplugged Thanks, I’ll certainly consider that. I am tempted to buy a 2nd hand BQ Aquarius X5 and put pmOS on it. I also wonder if #pmOS has the tools needed to take input from an external bluetooth GPS, which I suppose is a quite rare configuration. /cc @usia

@blub @unplugged Good to know LOS+OSMand is viable. OSMand is a bit heavy on my aos5 era device, so it would be interesting to know if Lineage can run it natively or if there is some emulation involved. Emulation would kill that option on old phones (and I intend to never buy a new phone).

Anyone know if there exists a #FOSS phone platform for which there is an #OSM app for offline navigation?

I imagine #OSMand could run on #pmOS using an Android emulator, but I am looking for lean app that runs natively on a FOSS platform so it performs okay on an old 2nd-hand phone.

@rms It’s a good action, but also important: realize that AT&T and #Verizon are far more evil than #Tmobile. So if you must patronize a mobile carrier it should be T-mobile (in parallel to this #petition).
