Northwestern University history professor Peter Hayes, who specializes in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, said normalizing antisemitism is a “real possibility” when there is a “public discussion of things that used to be beneath contempt.”

Good morning! A post just rolled across my fedi-timeline saying not to post about politics on Mastodon, so I'm here to remind you that:

1 "politics" refers to decision-making about how to live together in groups
2 choosing to not participate in political discussion is saying you support the status quo, and is a political stance
3 abstaining from politics because you feel safe from its impacts is a privilege and a choice to abandon your more vulnerable neighbours

Just as it's an impossibility to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, it's an impossibility to achieve success on your own. There are innumerable ways in which you have been helped along your road, no matter who you are.

If the wealth privileged maintain this underlying belief, if we continue to idolize & affirm the self-made financial genius, we're forever screwed.

Until we open our eyes to the propaganda of our political system, we doom ourselves to perpetuating our struggle 6/6

We've woven this propaganda into the very fabric of our culture to the point where it's even changed our #language

Consider the idea of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps", one of the most iconic US tenets. We laud the one who has managed, with no help from anywhere else, to climb the ladder of success & become king of the hill; We heap scorn on the rest who won't.

It is literally impossible to pull yourself up by the bootstraps. US culture has embraced an impossibility as our ideal 5/?

Both parties factionize the 97% to keep us always at each other's throats and never at the throats of the monied. They may differ in the rhetoric they use to do it, but the underlying goal is to weaponize our pain against each other.

And with the undeniability that if we all don't vote for one party or the other, our future and the futures of our children will be irrevocably destroyed, how can we afford to ever seek a different way.

We've normalized this to an absurd extent in US 4/?
