#Handwriting— its sentimental & historical significance. #JenBaldwin #Genealogist with #FindMyPast, speaks of UK #1921Census, where each person signed their own entry. A large handwriting sample!! #genealogy

‘“Each signature is unique for that person in that exact moment, you can put yourself in their shoes.”

Even the style of one brief entry can reveal a lot about a person, especially when you have background information such as their economic circumstances.’

@SocOnePlaceStudies I’m transcribing the #1921Census for my #OnePlaceStudy in #Orkney. Finding it v interesting: lack of female employment; no. of males out of work; number employed by the #Admiralty; no. of names I recognise. #OnePlaceWednesday

Looking again at the 1921 census for my Scottish family. Great uncle Andrew was 16 and a shepherd, and granny Jessie 14 and a housemaid. Only 11 year old Margaret was still at school. That 5-person Kerr family was crammed into 2 rooms. Versus gg-aunt Mary Fair Brown living with her 2 sons in 13-room Station Hotel in Melrose, which they were running. And gg-aunt Jessie Dodds was a housemaid in the 14-room St Cuthberts, i.e. Harmony Hall.

Writing article today for UK's Family Tree magazine on the newly released #1921census for #Scotland, will let you know when it is available. Also delighted to say I'll be chairing a series of talks for the magazine's Scottish Family History Month next Feb, as well as presenting one of the sessions - more details soon! In the meantime here's an abridged version of my recent article for the magazine on useful resources for Scottish #genealogy research in the 20th century family-tree.co.uk/how-to-guide

Just read query on Twitter, someone wishing you could see household index before paying for a #1921census entry for #Scotland. This is why I kicked up with ScotlandsPeople last week, when they initially removed census source references! Whilst you can't see household index, you can reconstruct it using source refs. Search for surname in district, then re-order results by Ref (click on blue Ref header). Those sharing surname in same household should have same ref & be clumped together. #genealogy

Thanks to the newly released Scottish #1921Census, I finally have the name of a company that my costumer relative worked for! And the Met has one of their designs, and Liverpool Museums has another! metmuseum.org/art/collection/s liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/evenin #genealogy #FamilyHistory #Scotland #FashionHistory

So, #genealogists, has your #1921Census in Scotland searching been fruitful at all? #genealogy #geneadons

When looking at the 1921 census records, you may find additonal information on the free header page (found via a link at the top of an entry from the census). In this case my great uncle John Paton was noted as a lodger and belt maker for R&J Dicks in Glasgow, but no address listed, just a long list of names. The header page notes he was with the Queen's Own Regiment Yeomanry, in camp and under canvas at Lanark Race Course, Lanark. #genealogy #FamilyHistory #1921census #Scotland #StAndrewsDay

One very unexpected 1921 Scottish census find was finding the Kelso-born niece of my ggg-granddad visiting a family in West Ferry, Dundee, not very far from where I live! Her brother also popped up as a trainee banker in Monifieth in an earlier census. But yup, still surprised! Sadly I think the West Ferry building no longer survives, though there are numerous architects’ plans.

My first problem encountered with the Scottish 1921 census. My great uncle does not appear when searching 'John B* Paton' (using a wildcard) or 'John B Paton'. When I search just 'John Paton', he comes up indexed as 'John Brownlie Paton'. The image compression also seems far higher than that for the 1911 census, but it is legible. #genealogy #1921census #Scotland #FamilyHistory

So far so good with launch of the 1921 census for #Scotland on scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Just discovered that my grandfather Charles Paton worked for shoe firm R. & J. Dicks upon his return from Belgium 1918. I imagine the firm offered to look after him after his father, my great grandfather, died in Brussels in 1916, where he had been the manager of two of their shoe shops, and after having had to hide for 18 months to avoid internment. #1921census #Scotland #genealogy Promising start to release

Star Trek - The Motion Picture. Scotty to Captain Kirk: "Any man who could achieve such a feat, I wouldna dare disappoint. She'll launch sir, and she'll be ready". The Enterprise launched and almost immediately plummeted into a wormhole.

No idea why that just occurred to me...! 😂 Fingers crossed! #Scotland #1921census

Just drawing up a list of ancestors I’ll be looking for soon if as hoped the Scottish 1921 census is put online today. Even just grandparents and their siblings and great grandparents and their siblings it’s a long list! Many in Melrose. Some near the Cheviots. Others location by then unknown.

Crossing fingers really hard that the ScotlandsPeople database downtime on Wednesday might mean they are about to finally release the 1921 Scottish census online. And drawing up a list of ancestors from the Scottish half of my ancestry that I need to search for. scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
