#Grumpy @!!

For Armistice Day tomorrow I started a "Network" on #Ancestry for the Princess Christian Workshops and Homes for Discharged Soldiers and Sailors, Brookwood, Bisley, Surrey.

I easily found the 1911 census for it on #FindMyPast which I used as the basis for the network.

So ... I set up the first few people in the network and ... funny ... no 1911 census for them on Ancestry. Zilch. Naff all.

This is a real pest!! The key network reference record simply isn't there :(

As much as I moan about #Ancestry and #FindMyPast, at least when their websites go down, there's soembody on site to sort things out. Not like the #GRO site, parts of which have been down for a few hours, and are likely to remain down until tomorrow (they always seem to do their maiantenance between 8am and 10am).

Please explain, #FindMyPast, why, when I add a marriage event (from your hints), to a person it changes their Life status from #Deceased to #Unknown. *Even though the marriage was over 150 years ago*!

#FamilyHistory

I see that #FindMyPast have today added incoming passenger lists (incoming to UK and Ireland).

What first caught my eye was seeing the names of folk who arrived from Trinidad on the Empire Windrush. My thoughts are with those whose names are here but whose entitlement to reside was rejected by the last government and as a consequence were summarily deported in their old age. So unjust.

Tfw I have found a person of interest on the 1841 census in #FindMyPast.

Being a good bunny I want to find them/it on Ancestry to link to my tree.

I could just do a screen grab off FMP and attach that.

But no. Being the devoted (obsessed) bod I am I spend half an hour doing battle with confused transcriptions and even worse presentations of search results until I finally get it.

:(

@camerongenealogy

I'm considering my options; #Ancestry does have records of use to me that aren't available elsewhere. OTOH, #FindMyPast have an odd (to my mind) way of going about things, making their site more awkward to use.

Agree 100% about 'Pro Tools'.

As you say, it's bloody pricey now. 😩

I have precious little outside the UK, but will be giving #FamilySearch more use.

Photo from the latest batch of old newspapers added to the British Newspaper Archive on #FindMyPast ... From The People's Friend of February 1900.

An advertisement promoting what appears to be a musical instrument devised in Hades.

Advertisement for a musical instrument called the Multi phone from a weekly newspaper called The People's Friend published in February 1900.

It makes extraordinary claims about its simplicity yet versatility including reproducing authentically the sounds made by many common species of animal. In particular the sound of ten thousand cats.

One wonders ...

Happy New Year to you, #Genchat , in return.

Yesterday saw me finally posting a batch of local #Birmingham news sheets published around the period of WW1 to the British Newspaper Archive at Boston Spa, Lincolnshire, for scanning and publishing on #FindMyPast

I'm revisiting (and updating) posts and boost from my old account that I want to close eventually (the account).

Here's two blog posts from the British Newspaper Archive (ie the FindMyPast genealogy subscription website). These give you a more specific look into what newspapers they cover:

Got an email from #FindMyPast indicating hints for checking out. In part, this is what it says;

"We cross-referenced the information from your searches with our records,
connecting details like dates, locations and relationships to quickly and more
accurately show you a selection of records that tell each person’s story. We’re
only human, so these results may not be 100% correct."

They're right. It's not 100% correct; It's 100% wrong. 😆

@jonnypencils
I know; It's not like it's getting harder - #ancestry, #findmypast, and goodness knows who else, all have plenty of high quality images available these days.

Sure, multiple subscriptions are pricey...

And yet another new feature from #FindMyPast that doesn't work;

Each person's side bar view (on the family tree page) now has an icon for UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland New Zealand, United States and Rest of World (RoW). As soon as you enter a place, it displays only the RoW icon. No matter how you enter the Country.

Still, I shouldn't expect anything else; They *still* can't match years in their events (census, birth, etc.) match.

It's usually blind transcribers at #Ancestry I'm tutting at in despair, but this time it's #FindmyPast, who have transcribed a Wigan ancestor's occupation as:

'Hindu in Bottom Mill'.

🤦‍♂️

Looking at the original it's actually 'minder', and in fact it's for the person above, not even my ancestor.

An all round fail and a reminder to always ALWAYS look at the original and never trust other people's transcriptions!!

#FindMyPast has added to its collection of school registers. This morning I've dipped into the beginnings of Bearwood Road school, Smethwick. The trials and tribulations and the first inspector's report.

Really rather good :)

Usually, I manage no more than three requests to unlock entries in the 1939 National Identity Register at #FindMyPast in a year.

So far, this year, I've done four. One on 3 Apr, two on 8 Apr and one today.

@peterrelph #WorldConnect is fairly ancient; it was part of #RootsWeb before Ancestry bought them. I trust that you take advantage of the occasional free periods offered by #Findmypast.
