"In the animation of satellite pictures below you can see the sea ice rather dramatically falling apart in mid-April and then again at the end of April.…Is it really the earliest in the satellite record? What makes the ice vulnerable? Composition, thickness, temperature? Is the ocean driving it or the atmosphere or both (it’s usually both), and what makes this year so unusual?"

Exploring the risks of ‘cascading’ tipping points in a warming world

Tipping elements within the Earth system are increasingly well understood.

Scientists have identified more than 25 parts of the Earth’s #climate system that are likely to have #TippingPoints – thresholds where a small additional change in global warming will cause them to irreversibly shift into a new state.

The “tipping” of these systems – which include the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (#AMOC), the #Amazon #rainforest and the #Greenland ice sheet – would have profound consequences for both the #biosphere and people.

More recent research suggests that triggering one tipping element could cause subsequent changes in other tipping elements, potentially leading to a #TippingCascade.

For example, a collapsed AMOC could lead to dieback of the Amazon rainforest and hasten the melt of the Greenland ice sheet.

However, the interactions between individual tipping elements – and the ways they might trigger each other – remain largely underexplored.

In a review study, published last year in Earth System Dynamics, we unpack the current state of scientific understanding of the interactions between individual tipping elements.

We find that scientific literature suggests the majority of interactions between tipping elements will lead to further destabilisation of the climate system.

Existing research also indicates that “tipping cascades” could occur even under current #GlobalWarming projections.

Scientific understanding of individual #TippingElements is continuously improving, but more research on their interactions is needed.

@BartVerheggen @Sustainable2050

Ah that makes sense.

So in contrast to what the #NOS quote suggests, it's not so much that the #AMOC causes the climate in #Europe to be warmer than that of (the comparable part of) #Canada. It actually prevents it from being much colder.

(Where "comparable" should then not only be understood in terms of latitude, but also in terms of the east-west exposure to the ocean.)

Good luck science-communicating that ...

@Sustainable2050

Vancouver is located at a similar latitude as Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon, but at the west coast of #Canada.

Therefore it receives relatively warm air from the ocean in the winter, which means its winter temperatures are similar to those of Amsterdam.

In fact, despite the absence of an #AMOC equivalent, #Vancouver 's average winter temperature appears to be slightly higher than that of #Amsterdam?

@BartVerheggen Any thoughts?

#EarthScience

Temperature averages throughout the year for Vancouver. Lowest average minimum in the winter: 35 °F.

Finally, the Netherlands is seriously looking into the effects of a possible weakening/collapse of the Atlantic Ocean heat circulation. This could mean significantly colder winters for the Netherlands.

The @NOS is picking up on the news about a potential breakdown of the Nort Atlantic Ocean Circulation #AMOC

But just to be clear (as it is not specifically mentioned in the article): such a cooling over Northwestern Europe would be *caused* by global warming, leading to excessive melting of the Greenland ice cap, thawing of permafrost and a large influx of freshwater into the Atlantic Ocean.

Nor is this scenario entirely new: already in 2004 there was a major Hollywood movie around this idea ( The Day after Tomorrow).

In 1989 James Burke produced a documentary named "After the Warming" which highlighted the effect of slowing the global thermohaline circulation current.

"That was the key to everything. Change the saltiness of the Atlantic and you change the world's weather."
