A #Subduction zone is a geological area where two tectonic plates collide, and one plate sinks or "subducts" beneath the other and is forced into the Earth's mantle.

This process is a result of density differences between the two plates and can trigger powerful #Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and #Tsunamis.

Rare blue yoderite replacing kyanite (-talc + quartz). Only found in two places on Earth (Tanzania and Zimbabwe), yoderite forms at high pressure in hot subduction zones from rocks rich in in Mg and Al, poor in alkalis and Ca, in the presence of water and oxidized ferric iron (±Mn).

Named after Hat Yoder of the Geophysical Lab, CIW.

Unravelling The Dance Of Earthquakes - Evidence Of Partial Synchronization Of The Northern San Andreas Fault And Cascadia Megathrust
--
doi.org/10.1130/GES02857.1 <-- shared paper

“Previous paleoseismic work has suggested a possible stress triggering relationship between the Cascadia subduction zone and the northern San Andreas fault based on similar event timings. Turbidite successions correlated to both systems may support this hypothesis. Historic earthquakes in 1980 and 1992 in the Cascadia subduction zone and the 1906 earthquake on the northern San Andreas fault left turbidite records that are temporally well constrained by bomb-carbon−supported age-depth models..."

Beautiful cathode-luminescence images showing trace-element zoning and changes in fluid composition during growth of jadeite.

From: Sorena Sorensen, George E Harlow, Douglas Rumble III (2006) The origin of jadeitite-forming subduction-zone fluids: CL-guided SIMS oxygen-isotope and trace-element evidence. American Mineralogist 91: (7) 979-996

Cathode-luminescence images of the mineral jadeite. Colour changes indicate changes in trace-element or defect concentrations. The jadeite crystals first grew with red- or blue- colours, then are rimmed with green CL with increases in Ca, Mg, and Cr. All images have a FOV of 1.6 mm.

Sorena Sorensen passed away this month.

Sorena was a long-time curator at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution. She was also an insightful and talented researcher who studied the role of fluids in metamorphism of subduction-related rocks. She also contributed to understanding the formation of jadeite and jade deposits.

At high pressures, fluorine-free topaz is stable: Topaz-OH. It's likely present only on recent Earth in our solar system: water, aluminous sediments (shales; pelites) from continental crust and cold subduction zones are all required.

Given these, Topaz-OH can potentially transport water into the mantle transition zone (where it's stored in #ringwoodite ) Figure from Huang et al (2020).
