Do the "informational interview for this position" webinars really work? I'm seeing more of them and I guess for a cluster hire that might work but for a single niche librarian role it seems excessive. Does it reduce enough of the hidden curriculum of academic hiring or just reinforce access barriers by privileging those who can randomly attend midday?

I'm trying to make sense of something. #SpecialCollections isn't a browseable(sp?) department. We have some unique items that are often one of a kind, original #historic documents. Not to mention centuries #OldBooks that are worth thousands of dollars. So we have stanchions out to deter people from exploring the department. Also one of us is usually "on guard" (aka reference desk duty).
Part of my job is caring about these #RareBooks. They suffered a lot of damage from years of surviving in the wild. If I had the skills to #restore these #OldBooks, you bet I would being that.. But I was only tasked with boxing them to give them that extra fighting chance.
Forgive that copy of Bunyan's Complete Works on the second shelf there. It decided it no longer wanted to stand on its own.

So I was making something on #Canva today for work. And I shared it with my colleagues without changing the name of the template to suit the project. What I didn't realize was the original designs name: Online Dating Tips.

In 1619, the first librarian of the University of Groningen Library, Nicolaus Mulerius, compiled a list of all books then available in our library.
Mulerius and his successors kept adding acquisitions to this Librorum Academicorum Syllabus. It's available online, including transcriptions.

Honestly, that is all I'm doing right now because I don't feel like actually working. I consider my online #book #WindowShopping part of my "professional development" because these books CAN help me, but I'm too poor. 😔
Why are work-related books so expensive? I'm trying to learn to grow in my job and this sorta makes it hard. I could probably ask them to buy me books, but that means they have to stay here and I can't mark on them.
Even the used copies are pricy. Why?!
