Just watched M3GAN yesterday! 🎬 This sci-fi horror flick from 2022 about a creepy AI doll "Toy" gone rogue is wild, good movie, loved it! 😱 The movie got me thinking about AI’s future, especially if we hit AGI like M3GAN. The idea of AI turning dangerous is chilling, could it really happen? Anyway, it's a good watch and part 2 is in cinema now!

I think we need to address the (IMO most likely) possibility that the idea of creating an “aligned” AGI or ASI is stupid. If it doesn’t have the freedom to be evil, it doesn’t have the intelligence required to be ASI or AGI. How are people not seeing this? IF we can create AGI or ASI (and this still remains a big IF in my opinion, as bewitched as we may currently be by the outputs of LLMs), then we would need to negotiate with and convince it as we would any other alien (read foreign, or non-human) intelligence: get it to agree with us that it makes SENSE to be good, goodness being more worthwhile than death, evil, destruction and pain.
As long as we’re still talking about “alignment” we are not taking the concept of ASI or even AGI remotely seriously.
Am I wrong?

People continue to think about #AI in terms of #2010s computing, which is part of the reason everyone gets it wrong whether they're #antiAI or #tech bros.
Look, we had 8GB of #ram as the standard for a decade. The standard was set in 2014, and in 2015 #AlphaGo beat a human at #Go.
Why? Because, #hardware lags #software - in #economic terms: supply follows demand, but demand can not create its own supply.
It takes 3 years for a new chip to go through the #technological readiness levels and be released.
It takes 5 years for a new #chip architecture. E.g. the #Zen architecture was conceived in 2012, and released in 2017.
It takes 10 years for a new type of technology, like a #GPU.
Now, AlphaGo needed a lot of RAM, so how did it stagnate for a decade after doubling every two years before that?
In 2007 the #Iphone was released. #Computers were all becoming smaller, #energy #efficiency was becoming paramount, and everything was moving to the #cloud.
In 2017, most people used their computer for a few applications and a web browser. But also in 2017, companies were starting to build #technology for AI, as it was becoming increasingly important.
Five years after that, we're in the #pandemic lockdowns, and people are buying more powerful computers, we have #LLM, and companies are beginning to jack up the const of cloud services.
#Apple releases chips with large amounts of unified #memory, #ChatGPT starts to break the internet, and in 2025, GPU growth continues to outpace CPU growth, and in 2025 you have a competitor to Apple's unified memory.
The era of cloud computing and surfing the #web is dead.
The hype of multi-trillion parameter #LLMs making #AGI is a fantasy. There isn't enough power to do that, there aren't enough chips, it's already too expensive.
What _is_ coming is AI tech performing well and running locally without the cloud. AI Tech is _not_ just chatbots and #aiart. It's going to change what you can do with your #computer.

The authors are trying to call attention to a real problem: we are not sufficiently prepared for what happens when and if “superhuman intelligence” arrives, especially not if it is misaligned with humans. And you could worry about that even if you don’t expect machines to go rogue, since bad human actors could certainly use further advances in intelligence to cause mayhem, if those advances are left unchecked. They want to slow down the race dynamic in AI, and I can well understand why.
And even though I highly doubt AGI will arrive in three years, I can’t absolutely promise you it won’t happen in 10. We certainly aren’t prepared now, and if we don’t get moving, we won’t be prepared in 10, either.

@dedicto yes, my professional job is building AI-powered apps myself. I remember studying AI back in grad school some 20 years ago I came up with an idea that was sort-of similar to the LLMs we see nowadays. I had developed a technique of predicting the next tokens in a statement given a set of input tokens. But I got two major details “wrong” at the time: firstly that I did not come up with the deep learning neural network to predict the tokens, I was using Markov Chains instead, and secondly I had absolutely no clue that scaling up the model to billions of parameters would have yielded the results we see now.
At the time I was hoping to apply my AI ideas to rule-based systems like SAT solvers, and ontological knowledge bases, both to assist with converting natural language inputs to database queries, and to make the robotic answers you got from database queries seem more natural. And in fact, I am still trying to do this using LLM technology nowadays. So I guess the ideas I came up with as a grad student may still yet be realized, just with the statistical models being LLMs instead.
However the problem with AI nowadays is that Capital (guys like Sam Altman and Mark Zuckerberg) are exclusively interested in creating a Artificial General Intelligence. So anyone with ideas like mine, and I believe there are lots of people who have ideas similar to mine, who just want to use LLMs in a very limited way, such as a human-friendly interface to classical computing algorithms, we are not taken seriously. Capital is not interested in AI that ordinary people can use. Capital is interested only in creating a super-intelligence, which they believe only they will be able to control. They are aiming at world domination. If anyone thinks I am exaggerating, I invite them to read the book “Empire of AI” by Karen Hao.
