Have been pretty quiet lately as I've been refactoring some of my existing work to better support future exploration/experimentation, while at the same time reacquainting myself with programming in Common Lisp. Feels so good to be back working with this toolset. (❤️)

Reading through Anthropic's official repo for giving agents various "super skills"[1]... There's an "algorithmic art" skill and the instructions are explicitly encouraging pure deception as one of the key "critical guidelines":

"The philosophy MUST stress multiple times that the final algorithm should appear as though it took countless hours to develop, was refined with care, and comes from someone at the absolute top of their field. This framing is essential - repeat phrases like "meticulously crafted algorithm," "the product of deep computational expertise," "painstaking optimization," "master-level implementation.""

github.com/anthropics/skills/b

For someone who's been working in this field for almost 30 years, this "skills.md" file is just the worst... and so far off the mark! 🤮

Touch some effing grass, Anthropic (and all boosters)! How can so many people think this approach is _the_ future? The map is not the terrain...

[1] Alone the premise of this repo is pure comedy gold and pure sadness in equal measures!

Like I said a while ago, I'm going back and adding color to old sketches which were black and white (the first image).

Here are some wobbly rainbows (the other three).

I think it's better.

It's been quiet on the demo front as my musician side has recently taken over. This slow return to musicianship started last summer, with the new twist of using the Karelian language. I've also put some of my old and new demos to work for the music videos. Here's the latest piece by me and Noira, you'll find a couple more on the same Salixvelox channel:

A short screen recording of the second prototype mentioned earlier (also an early WIP version with still quite a few obvious visual issues)...

Some _very_ early algorithm concept/pre-viz sketches/explorations for the Tron Legacy (2010) intro sequence. They informed another concept/approach in which we applied a similar algorithm to progressively trace out edges of an initially invisible and super detailed 3D city mesh. This required a lot of effort to retopologize the (huge) geometry supplied and creating a multi-res navigation graph to prioritize long/major edges over shorter ones, filter out undesired edges/directions, thereby creating a visual reveal in which the agents progressed from tracing out super low-res boxes to high-res architectural features... Eventually, both of these prototypes weren't used though, and the director & team opted for a more stripped down solution with much fewer agents/traces, created in Houdini...

Maybe there is a tiny bit of brightness at the center of this black hole. We go onward because there is no other way.

It's Friday, spring is here (a bit too early) — it feels like a good day to share another minute recording of a variation of my Actiniaria piece which I worked on last spring and think also captures that much needed #BloomScrolling spirit...

See #Actiniaria for more context...

(Note: Sadly Firefox still doesn't respect the Rec2020 color profile in the video, please download the video or use Chrome or Safari for full viewing pleasure...)

It looks like it happens quickly,

but
it
does
not.

Latest harvest of "Light Streaks" — generative photography (see start of thread for context and an explanation of the technique...)

Again, all of these variations are still from the exact same system and choice of five randomly chosen functions. The only variable between them is the initial random seed number. Exposure here is between 5-10 billion iterations... I'm amazed by just how varied the outcomes are, still regularly encountering directions I haven't seen before...
