The midway surprise Prasat Rorng Ramong

An early morning at Prasat Rorng Ramong. This small temple remain alone off the main road between Angkor Wat and the south moat of Angkor Thom. Enclosed by a narrow road and mostly hidden by trees. It may look insignificant and small, but it is larger than the entry track suggest. And well worth a closer look.

The temple has many names. Prasat Rorng Ramong, Rong Lmong, ប្រាសាទរោងរមុង and Rung Lmong. It is a Hindu temple not far from the entrance to the hill temple Phnom Bakheng.

It is built in the same style as Phnom Bakheng temple, with one tower foundation and walls in good condition, remains of a second tower but no traces of what was probably a third tower.

A small laterite causeway leads eastwards from the main remains. There are reported traces of a small moat around the temple, but it is dried out and most traces of it has disappeared.

A glimpse of the early, old capital
Rorng Ramong was built during the reign of Yasovarman I, the great king that moved the Khmer imperial capital from Hariharalaya. The god king/emperor founded the Yaśodharapura capital city near today’s Nokor Thom/Angkor Thom. This third Khmer imperial capital was centred on Bakheng Hill, in the early 900s CE.

This temple is significant because it gives a good idea of how these early temples was planned and build into the city structure.

Photo shows the remains of a Khmer temple tower. It has a platform with stairs lead up from a stone laden causeway. On top of the platform there is a gate in a ground floor wall. It leads into a room with an altar and small guard statues. The three other walls are partly fallen down. The top of the temple tower is lost. The temple is made of red laterite stone.
It was once probably three towers in this 1100 year old temple, but to the north of this there are some remains of a platform and gate lintel. The third tower is probably long gone. Around the platform there are remains of a Yoni basin, and some stone art. The open area is covered by dirt and fallen leaves, and is flanked by green forest. In the background the main road between Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom is visible. Cambodia is as safe, comfortable and kind as ever. Angkor and Siem Reap warmly welcomes visitors as the home of several cultural world heritage sites and good food.

A split in the road….

…and the Apsara-crew took the road less travelled, because they make all the difference.

To manage, develop and maintain the vast human cultural treasure of the Angkor Wat and Angkor Park is a monumental task, literally speaking.

Apsara Authority are the organisation caring for the approximately 420 km2 area of Angkor Archaeological Park. It contains more than 70 larger temple sites, and over 1000 smaller sites.

Photo shows a green turf with two tracks; one main horizontally track where two persons in leisure clothing is walking right bound. Then there is a diagonal, less used track where two people wearing the green long sleeved polo shirt of the Apsara Maintenance crew is walking with tools and a and an empty garbage bag. Both tracks lead to different parts of the large temple complex of Angkor Wat outside to the right in this photo. In the background there is a low stone fence in Angkor High Imperial architectural style. Behind the fence, on a lower level is a small lake. It is known as one of two mirror lakes flanking the main west entrance to Angkor Wat temple. Around and behind the mirror lake green turf and some trees are stretching out to one of the gates in the main wall around Angkor Wat. It is early morning on an overcast day. Cambodia is as safe, comfortable and kind as ever. Angkor and Siem Reap warmly welcomes visitors as the home of several cultural world heritage sites.

Blue face in blue night

The blue colour of the hour just after sunset is enhanced by a large painting in blue variations and black of a Bayon portrait. These stylised portrait covers the facade of Bayon Temple in Angkor Thom. They are supposed to be of the great emperor Jayavarman VII, who built Bayon as his State Temple. But the style imitates classic pose of a Buddha, reminding everyone JVII was the first powerful Buddhist god king of the Khmer empire.

Night market in Siem Reap is not one place. There are several. This one is from the newest, established in 2018. There are two more.

Siem Reap- morre than temples
The night markets are one of the night life activities in Siem Reap, visited by tourists and locals alike. One of the interesting aspects of Cambodia’s second largest city are the effect the large influx of visitors an expat has on the city life and offerings. There is a great chance to meet interesting people activities in this city built on the ancient Khmer Empire and the modern international culture.

Visitors and long stayers alike have offerings of museums, mine sniffing hero rats, botanical garden, animal refugee centre, Circus, art galleries, aquarium and wildness centre.

Shopping is an option not only for the evening, and then there is a wide offering of places to eat and drink. That includes fine dining with both international and local based cuisine, all the way to street food. There are offerings for bike trips, sunset trips, photo trips, Angkor off the beaten track-trips, added with options like food class, pottery class or art classes.

Bringing food for mommy

My first visit to Angkor Wat green season 2011CE.

This couple, I guess brother and sister, had their priority and duty clear this early fall day.
Securing lunch for mommy, one of the Apsara staffers.

An important task making sure the maintenance and operation of the 8th Wonder of the World works smoothly and efficiently.

Worlds largest religious building was built in the 1150s.

Photo shows two young children with their back to the photographer walking a stone bridge towards a temple wall of towers and gates in Angkor High Imperial architectural style. The stone bridge is built over an area of mostly green turf, with a couple of trees growing just to the right. They are carrying a Tiffin food carrier, or Chan Shrak, a levelled carrier where different types of food are separated into a tower of containers. Together these containers make for a typical meal of soup, fish/meat and veggies, and steamed rice. There are two buildings flanking each side of the bridge, libraries in this design. It is early morning on an overcast day. Cambodia is as safe, comfortable and kind as ever. Angkor and Siem Reap warmly welcomes visitors as the home of several cultural world heritage sites.

The real heroes of Angkor Park

Early morning by the moat of Angkor Wat. This Apsara maintenance crew is doing vital and important cleaning duties.

This moat is a 1.5 km by 1.3 km rectangle, with a width between 190 to 200 meters. It encloses the whole Angkor Wat and symbolizes the cosmic oceans surrounding the Hindu god’s home. And provides a crucial foundational stability for the largest religious monuments in the world.

Photo shows two small wooden boats connected with a small platform on a large water moat. There are two persons in the front of the boats with a green uniform shirt of Apsara staff. They are collecting leaves, driftwood and rubbish out of the water and collecting it on the platform. Another staff member is controlling and steering the boats from the back. In the background the surrounding wall around the famous Angkor Wat is visible behind a small dyke and some trees. It is a slightly overcast day. Cambodia is as safe, comfortable and kind as ever. Angkor and Siem Reap warmly welcomes visitors.

You came to a split in the road….

To manage, develop and maintain the vast human cultural treasure of the Angkor Park, the Apsara Authority was established back in 1995.

It has ha monumental task, literally speaking, taking care of the approximately 420 km2 area of the main Angkor Archaeological Park. It contains more than 70 larger temple sites, and over 1000 smaller sites and remains.

Important task and employer
Easy recognisable with their green uniforms, the Apsara Maintenance staff are making the visit into the Angkor Archaeological Park and sites possible, safe and accessible. It is a highly respected and important effort on behalf of Cambodia’s long and proud history, civilisation and culture. And of course, the common human historic value as a World Cultural Heritage site for the rest of us.

With over 3 000 employees, the Apsara Authority is the largest single employer in the Siem Reap province.

Bringing food for mommy

A memory from my first visit to Angkor Wat. This couple, I guess brother and sister, had their priority and duty clear this early fall day in the green season of 2011CE.

It was bringing lunch to mommy, one of the Apsara maintenance staffers at Angkor Wat. Making sure the maintenance and operation of the 8th Wonder of the World was smoothly and efficient.

State Temple, tomb, now Wat
Angkor Wat was original a royal state temple built in honour of the Hindu god Vishnu in the mid-12th Century CE. It is a tomb for the God King Suryavarman II too.
As a usurper, he needed to show his right to the throne by building this enormous religious building. It is still the largest and probably the most famous religious buildings in our common human cultural heritage.

Later it was converted to a Buddhist temple and monastery for religious worship and learning, a “Wat”.

Classic combination
Angkor Wat represents two architectural styles for Hindu temples. We have the temple mountain as a reminder of the 5 sacred Meru mountain, home of the Hindu gods. And the later galleried temple.

The galleries are even more interesting than usual. In addition to honour the gods and religious rites, it is the history of the reign of a powerful emperor.

This is one of the temples in Angkor Park where it is highly advisable to have a guide on your first visit. The size is easier to understand when you have some knowledgeable to show the important highlights and the best photo spots.

The real heroes of Angkor Park

Early morning at by the moat of Angkor Wat. This Apsara maintenance crew is doing the vital cleaning of the moat.

This moat is a 1.5 km by 1.3 km rectangle, with a width between 190 to 200 meters. The max depth is 4 meters. It is enclosing the whole Angkor Wat and symbolizes the cosmic oceans surrounding the Hindu god’s home.

It provides a crucial foundational stability for the largest religious monuments in the world. The old Khmer excelled in hydraulic engineering, and the old Angkor core capital was a hydraulic city. Angkor Wat was built at the midpoint of the 630 years of the Khmer Empire. The construction clearly demonstrates how advance their technology and engineering had advanced.

Modern heroes
This is a small shoutout to the modern heroes of Angkor; the largest part of the approximately 3000 staff that maintains, secure and restore this world cultural heritage.

It is a monumental task, pun intended. The Angkor Archaeological Park is about 420 sq. kilometres large. There are over 70 larger temple sites, and more than 1000 smaller sites and remains in the extended park.

The Apsara (Authority for the Protection of the Site and Management of the Region of Angkor) is the organisation established to run this task. You meet them first at the Angkor ticket office, but that is only one of the 15 departments.

Say hi, please
First time I visited, the ticket office was a small shack in the middle of thick jungle. Now it is a stately building with all the facilities needed to cater to thousands of tourists a day.

And then you have these maintenance guys working everywhere.

Remember to greet them with a smile and maybe a Sampeah greeting when you meet them.

An early cool morning at Angkor Wat - after the green season comes the chill one

Current reports of weather in Cambodia tells of cool nights with temperature around 20 degrees C. It gets to 30 degrees by lunch.

Not unusual. Every December and January there is a short, cold season in the north of the Kingdom of Wonder.

It gives the temple area a somewhat cooler colours.

Like the 8th Wonder of the World, Angkor Wat.

Photo shows the Angkor Wat temple behind the perimeter wall. Photo is taken from the moat surrounding the temple grounds. In the water there are water lilies. It is a clear, chill day and the light blue sky has some light speck of clouds. Cambodia is as safe, comfortable and kind as ever. Angkor and Siem Reap warmly welcomes visitors.
