Today I received email from Avast with the subject "Attention! Password leak detected." It lists several old breaches containing my email address which of course I already know about. At the bottom it says, "You received this email because [my email address redacted] was entered into Avast Hack Check to see if there were any leaked passwords associated with that email address."
Reader, I assure you that I did not enter my email address into Avast Hack Check.

First screenshot of email from Avast. Subject is "Attention! Password leak detected." Then there's the Avast One logo which includes the words "Avast One", then a stylized drawing of a hand with some hearts rising up from it for some inexplicable reason, then the large-print headline, "Your password leak report from Avast Hack Check".Screenshot of three of the "leaks" reported in the email. At the top in an orange box it says, "Leaks found! Change your passwords on these accounts immediately if you haven't already." Then it shows three sites whose passwords associated with my email address were ostensibly leaked, with the date for each. The sites are scribbled out in the screenshot for privacy reasons.Screenshot of the footer of the email which shows this message: "You received this email because [redacted] was entered into Avast Hack Check to see if there were any leaked passwords associated with that email address."

Bonjour, c'est un excellent choix. j'ai moi-même effectué la même chose. Maintenant je suis à la recherche de produit antivirus non Américain. cela va être difficile je pense car #Avast et #Avira ont étés racheté par Gen Digital Inc.

Dear Avast Antivirus,
Please don't hesitate to reach out next time if you need any advice figuring out what to do with these brilliant pranks.
Rest assured that the time I *invested* today investigating this issue and calming some of your ex-clients has made my day.

Remember, non-techie Windows users really appreciate this sense of humor in antivirus programs 🤦‍♂️

A stupid pop-up prank from Avast that reads as follows:
Welcome to the Matrix
You've successfully entered the Matrix. But don't worry--it's all just an April Fool's Day glitch. Things will return to "normal" soon.... or will they? Exist if you want to forget this ever happened.

I finally figured out what has been causing me severe mouse look lag issues in #VRChat desktop mode over time for the last year or so.

Turns out #DisplayFusion which I'm using to adjust my desktop wallpaper causes the lag over time, potentially because it also has window management features such as adding extra buttons to the window title bar.

It could also be related to #EasyAntiCheat or #Avast hooking into DisplayFusion to do their thing and potentially causing memory leaks.

Anyways, exiting DisplayFusion fixed my lag issues.

I would never have suspected that it was my wallpaper changer, especially since I'm not using any of it's other features.

@violenteastcoastcity FYI - I switched from to Browser in the last couple of weeks.

My main issues with Firefox are:
Memory hog (1 to 2 GB!)
Declining privacy policies...

I have no info/experience with

Been using the browser as a replacement for for several days now. Will be sticking with Avast but Firefox was better at blocking YouTube ads.

I've got uBlock Origin installed with both browsers. With Avast, I get the damn ads in YouTube popping up then disappearing. Or I get 'skip ad' screen.

In Firefox with uBlock, I never saw the ads at all.

Not sure if it's Avast or uBlock.

Main reasons ditching Firefox are:

1. Crap like 'Pockets'
2. Last fall's Privacy-Preserving Attribution (PPA) thing that you had to turn off.
3. Very high memory usage (1 to 2 GB)/slow performance. Very noticeable after upgrading my home network for max 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps.
4. The current 'Terms of Service' kurfluffle.
5. Changes on the printing

It's slow for Firefox.

Hopefully, the Avast browser will be OK.

Since yesterday, been using the Avast browser as a Firefox replacement.

I'm a long-time Firefox user.

So far it's good. It works fine on my 2015 iMac iBook.

Main thing Avast lacks is separators in bookmarks, but folders can be used instead.

The downer is that Avast will not load on my mid-2012 iMac iMini. That one may need to be replaced.

Last year, Avast reached a $16.5 million settlement with the FTC, which includes compensation for users who bought Avast software between August 2014 and January 2020.

The FTC found that the company collected information on religious beliefs, health concerns, political leanings, financial status, and location without user consent and sold it through a subsidiary (also without consent).

Now, customers can start to claim refunds from the settlement.
