Several years ago, when taking part in an anti-gun violence demonstration, Paul McCartney called John Lennon his best friend. I buy it. In his last days, Lennon was planning to travel to visit McCartney and his family.

Going right on a limb here, it is my guess that neither of them was among the easiest people in the world to get along with; but they understood one another and they had been friends for a very long time.
