A wide horizontal photograph of a historic stone cottage at Langmeil Winery in South Australia.

The building features traditional mottled stonework, a corrugated iron roof with a red brick chimney, and a wide veranda supported by white posts.

A lush green lawn sits in the foreground, bordered by a rustic wooden fence. To the right, a sign on a corrugated fence details the winery's rainwater collection. The scene is captured under a bright, clear blue sky.

This evening I shall mainly be drinking this. £7.50/bottle and worth triple that. Thoroughly recommended.

And now my modern project returns to the quote that's stuck in my head for the last 9 years. With a new article! #historyAU #artHistoryAU #colonialArtAU #S_T_Gill #Barossa #SouthAustralia #Angas

S.T. Gill at Angas' Barossa 1844

S. T. Gill was in the #Barossa sketching for the Angas family from 29 October to 4 November 1844. I identify some works as well as influences on Angas publications: "South Australia Illustrated" and "Barossa Range and its neighbourhood".

In the 1980s Ralph Grandison was mapping #S_T_Gill's artworks in #SouthAustralia. I recently viewed in the State Library his 1991 paper on Gill's 1844 #Barossa works. Interestingly he's included many of "The Seasons and The Months" - see image snippet. Clearly he didn't accept Appleyard & Radford's 1986 redating of these from 1847 to 1840-42. #artHistoryAU #colonialArtAU #historicalMapping

Over the next few months, I'll need to supplement my earlier work with Grandison's insights at: coombe.id.au/S_T_Gill/S_T_Gill

This 1874 picture is later than my #S_T_Gill project scope but today I worked it a bit more. It seems to show the now heritage Kingsford Homestead on the North Para River near #Gawler #SouthAustralia. #KingsfordBarossa #Barossa

"The first mill in the Barossa was a water mill … on Tanunda Creek upstream from Bethany in 1843. However, that was destroyed by floods in the 1920s and little remains of this earliest mill." - #Barossa Council Heriatge Review 2001

#S_T_Gill sketched the mill in 1844. Although there is no trace of his original sketching, there are two retrospectives from the 1860s / 1870s, once owned by fellow artist Louis Buvelot. #SouthAustralia #artHistoryAU
