No photos yet but I've confirmed there's a Say's Phoebe using the nest above my front door that was built by Barn Swallows last year. This is not a species that I've ever seen this close to the city before (granted the direct vicinity of my place is mostly farmland), and I've never seen one of their nests at all, as far as I know.

My cat badgers me nonstop every night to let her out there. She's obsessed.

Anna's are such chill hummingbirds compared to Rufous. A Rufous will zealously guard their food source by diving as hard as they can into the interloper. They're like little fighter jets. The Anna's do a little dance in the air together, like aerial balerinas. Then generally end up sharing the food.

These days they're all over the place, the Anna's. The neighbor across the street has 6 huge flax plants. This year they bloomed like crazy. Great big sticky flowers. What with the foxglove and the evening primrose and the feeders there's a plethora of food.

The other day I watched a couple of them taunting Noodle the Alarm Cat. Noodle's on the deck, the hummers are hovering just out of reach off the edge. "Ha ha ha. You are powerless." Not even momentarily, they did this for a half hour.

yesterday there was an ibis in my yard, solo. I noticed it had what looked like a wattle, and that its face was generally more bright than usual. I learned that it was actually a gular pouch/sac and during high breeding season, the females develop it for about a week to attract mates. #birdtoot
