Book bindings have memory. These two volumes recently removed from exhibition show the possible consequences of prolonged display.

The left boards will eventually settle back into a more horizontal position given time and careful handling.

This is called a "perfect binding". It isn't perfect.

If you use the book regularly and it isn't historically/emotionally significant, I suggest taking it to a print shop to be spine trimmed and spiral bound.

If historically/emotionally significant, a book conservator can hinge the board back into position.

On the conservation bench today is a #book from 1665 for which I am writing a condition report and applying a couple very small paper repairs.

Sometimes I get to spend time looking closely at wonderful things. In this case, preparing for the next exhibition.

Up next is our wonderful and obviously glamorous Production Coordinator, Solange Masher! πŸ‘‹

Solange is based in #Sheffield, South #Yorkshire, and is a book conservator. πŸ“š πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

She'll be helping us plan the show, and also think of various clever ways we can raise money for what we do (it's a lot of unpaid hours to put free content into the world and half the team is freelance).

Welcome, Solange!

A selfie of a white woman with shoulder-length dark brown hair, a light grey jumper with a hint of a striped top underneath, and a denim apron or dungarees (we can just make out two straps). She's standing in a book conservation studio with big windows, book presses, map drawers, and various tools on worktops in the background.

In the middle is the logo of The C Word: The Conservators' Podcast (a glass beaker full of various conservation tools).

On the right is a purple square with a hand-writing like text reading "Solange" and a plainer font reading "Production Coordinator"

Book friends, did I miss something? Why does only one of my usual retailers still sell any paper/Mylar dust jacket covers at all? My libraries and my bookstore are still using them, so where are they getting them? Simple Mylar sheets aren't what I need, but it's all Gaylord seems to be offering.

Condition checking before sending out on loan:
- parchment undulations
- engrained dirt
- creased
- accretions, etc.

Having listed the above, this 12th century bible is doing ok.
