#BoostAllTheThings

I haven't seen this float around my feed yet, so here it is:

“Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty.”

-Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

@alexglow As someone full of anxieties about doing stuff like this in RL and on other social media I liberally like and boost ALL THE THINGS here, and it feels good and necessary for lack of an artificial algorithm.

Plus, I get a kick out of seeing that a post I boosted gets a whole bunch of new likes, boosts and interactions. :BoostOK:

@mmmeljoann

We may or may not stop boosting your posts about your incredible new single at some point in the future but that day has most definitely not come yet!

Boost all the things and win the fabulous prize of your boosts disappearing from my timeline, because I mute your boosts.

Bill: "It is important to practice self-care if you don't want to have a meltdown."

Bill: [Boosts all those ill-conceived posts from other people.]

Me: [I see a lot of shit in my timeline. I mute Bill's boosts.]

Bill: "Hey, someone told me you muted my boosts. What gives?"

Me: "I practiced self-care."

Nothing shameless about self promotion. This is not the birdsite. If you want people to see you, go right ahead and boost. If you're proud of what you do, boost it. Not going to judge you, mainly because we can't see who boosted (or we don't care). 😎

@NikkiClark86 #welcome to the #fediverse ! It can be a bit of a learning curve but we're a friendly bunch here. Ask questions, find answers, add to the conversation! ❤️

You've already joined up on the #histodons list - huzzah!!

Searches are done by tagging things - so #boostallthethings and #tagallthethings!

Another good group is @histodons - if you follow it you'll see all the posts that it boosts, and if you tag it in a post it'll share it with all the people in the group!

#Accessibility

In the desktop version of the app, if a red box appears around an image, it means there is no #AlternativeText and the image is inaccessible. If no red box appears, hover your mouse over the image and you should be able to read the image description or #AltText.

What do you observe in your local timeline?

#BoostAllTheThings only if the things are #accessible.

Apologies - too much boosting can be a bit overwhelming, so for my own sanity and productivity I'll have to mute the above post (at least for a while).

Nevertheless, keep boosting/re-tooting/reblogging all those great people around you - especially if they are just starting out!

@sad_electronics

I believe the answer to your question is no, you can't boost too much! #BoostAllTheThings

Also, there is a way for having group functionality in the #Fediverse:

Simply follow @electronics and whenever you mention @electronics in a post it will be shared to all of its members (currently only myself though).

If you wanted to start another group (eg @makers@gup.pe ) just search for it, and it'll be created automatically.

See a.gup.pe/ for details.

@lxo

Here's what I gathered:

A post only shows up on *your* timeline if you follow the original author or someone you follow boosts it.

If the author is on your own instance their post appears on the *local* timeline.

If someone on your instance follows the author, boosted the post, or specifically searched for that posts URL, the post appears on the *federated* timeline.

Otherwise the post never even reaches your instance, let alone you.

#FediTips #BoostAllTheThings

What makes up each timeline?
If following @Foo, toots show in Home timeline.
If @Foo is on your instance, toots show in Local timeline.
If someone on your instance follows @Foo, their toots end up in your Federated timeline.
If someone on your instance searches for a toot by URL, that toot ends up on your Federated timeline.
This applies to toots sent as Public only.

To add to the above:

Since there is no #algorithm it is really important that you #boost interesting posts by others.

A star (liking) does nothing to help increase a post's visibility beyond the original author's followers.

I know it is strange coming from 🐦, but it really is the only way to increase a post's audience.

So #BoostAllTheThings (if you like them) and you will notice others will do the same to your content. Here we're all in it together!
