I also have to note that I observed about 20% of the cars ahead of us being diverted for secondary inspection. I've never seen that many diverted even in the days when all lanes were staffed and traffic was much higher.

So we hand over our passports and get asked the usual questions:

- where do we live
- how did we get to the border
- anything to declare

We give the answers: our home city/state, we drove in this car, and nothing to declare as it's the same stuff we arrived in Canada with 8 months ago.

And then the border crossing person snaps at my husband (who was driving): "So why does your car have Washington plates?"

I have made crossings to/from Canada during Trump's previous presidency. It was stressful and somewhat antagonistic on the U.S. side back then.

Today was chaos. There were only two booths open, causing an artificial wait of 40 minutes (compared to the less than five on the Canada side).

But that wasn't the worst of it. The worst part was the gaslighting. Granted we had our daughter and her stuff with us to return home for four months (summer term she's doing remotely).

The other thing Canada wants to know is where are we going and how long we'll be staying. It gets a little more complicated now when returning with our youngest as she has a study permit. Then there's the question of how long are we her parents planning on staying since we could apply to live with her during her studies.

But it's always predictable and professional and friendly.
