We aim to establish a Network of Data Stewards that operates with integrity, transparency, and societal benefit. Anyone conducting research under the auspice of the network will be expected to undergo mandatory ethics training to ensure they adhere appropriately to UKRI responsible innovation policies and ethics guidelines.
the British Library,and more recently as academic lead for Digital Preservation Southampton, a new enterprise unit dedicated to meeting community needs around the long-term stewardship of complex digital assets, and as Co-Lead on Coastal and Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility, a new RICHeS funded research infrastructure.

Our goal is to establish a diverse, inclusive, self-sustaining community of Data Stewards and to create a model for data steward support systems within research intensive institutions, thereby clarifying their role and integration within the research data lifecycle.
How can data stewardship tasks be successfully shared? Sabina Keller and Lukas Hörtnagl (Grassland Sciences research group at Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS), ETH Zürich) provide some insights.
Data stewardship in a research group does not have to be a “one-person show”. What synergies can be used when working in tandem to overcome challenges and make a research group's work more efficient?
Isobel Stark has held roles in local and regional groups including:RLUK Open Strategy Network, Science and Engineering South Research Data Group (alongside Pearman-Kanza), and ARMA Research and Innovation Culture SIG.
Pearman-Kanza and Stark have delivered workshops and training to researchers, librarians and research managers (ranging in backgrounds and career stages) to equip them with skills to manage and share dataveffectively and responsibly.
Through CaSDar, we will foster recognition of Data Stewards' contributions to the research lifecycle.
Just like weekends restore balance and give us time to tidy up, rest, and plan, data stewards bring structure and sustainability to the data ecosystem. They ensure data is well-documented, properly formatted, ethically managed, and ready for reuse, so that when the next “Monday” (or dataset) arrives, everything is in place.
Without weekends, burnout creeps in. Without data stewards, data chaos takes over. ✌️
🔴 By working on meaningful, relevant challenges, learners are better prepared for the demands of academic research, industry roles, or further study.
CaSDaR will focus on shared institutional needs, establishing clear career paths and recognition for data stewardship, and fostering a supportive community.
This will significantly contribute to the research sector's ability to equip technical professionals in data stewardship, and unlock the full potential of research data, driving innovation and discovery.
