José Cipriano Castro Ruiz was a Venezuelan politician and officer of the military who served as president from 1899 to 1908. I found this much harder to get into than Creation Lake as it lacked a central character, but it was worth the effort, and now know more about Cuba before the revolution, at least from the point of view of the privileged Americans working and living there.
