From Overcast to Castro: A Podcast App Journey

I listen to a lot of podcasts.

Over the years, I’ve used just about every podcast app worth trying, but for a long time, Overcast was my go-to. One of the big features that kept me there was the “priority” system, which pushed your favorite shows to the top of the queue automatically. It helped manage the chaos.

That feature stopped working reliably around the time of Overcast’s big rewrite in 2024. I kept using it for a while, hoping things would improve, but they never really did. At one point I removed all of the prioritization settings to simplify things, but that only made the experience worse.

So I started looking around.

I gave Pocket Casts a try, and to its credit, it was mostly great. Filters were powerful, syncing worked well across devices, and the UI was clean and dependable. But over time, I missed the triage-style listening flow I was used to. Neither Overcast nor Pocket Casts really delivered that anymore. I tried to rig up my own system which was mostly really solid, but it just wasn’t the right fit for me.

That’s when I decided to give Castro another look.

Castro was acquired by new developers in 2024, and the app has seen a real resurgence since then. Long-standing bugs and edge case issues have been addressed, and the core experience that made Castro compelling in the first place has stayed intact.

What I’ve always appreciated about Castro is its Inbox and Queue system. You can subscribe to your favorite shows, but new episodes don’t go straight into your Up Next list unless you want them to. Instead, they show up in an inbox for review. This makes it easy to be intentional about what I listen to. You can also push important episodes to the top of your queue, which gives me back the control I lost when Overcast’s system broke.

And while it’s not the most important thing for a podcast app, Castro is the best looking option in my opinion. The typography, layout, and color choices are all more thoughtful than the competition. You don’t spend a lot of time inside the app once you hit play, but good design still matters, and Castro gets it right. The voice boost and trim silence features aren’t quite as good as Overcast in my experience, but it’s all still there.

For now, Castro is the podcast app that best fits how I want to listen. Unless something major changes, I’m planning to stick with it. The yearly subscription is $25 instead of $15, but it’s being actively developed at a clip much greater than what I’ve seen in Overcast-land.

Taking the wrong way also takes you to places…

I couldn’t wrap my head around it. The locals said this was the way to Pico Turquíno, the highest #mountain on #Cuba. But why was I walking miles and miles on a concrete road and not on a cute pathway like I imagined? Suddenly a jeep with 2 military stopped next to me.

What was I doing here? Walking up the mountain.
Why would I do that? Because I love to hike.
Why would one hike here? Because I love nature.

The two looked at each other in disbelief but clearly saw I didn’t had any harmful intentions, so they let me continue. But, having seen my camera dangling from my shoulder asked to put it away.

No pictures! If you take any pictures we will have to confiscate your camera… There’s a military camp uphill.

They looked serious enough, so I put my camera away and continued my journey only to arrive at a gate a couple of hours later. I couldn’t proceed and some guard urged me to return where I came from. I could see #picoturquino lying a little further, but there was no possibility to reach it from where I was. #Deception.

Later I learned that I had reached La Comándancia de la Plata de Sierra Maestra, a mouthful to say the old headquarters where #Castro led the revolution in ’58 against Batista and which were then (and probably still are) barracks to the Cuban military and which were standing in the way to reach Pico Turquíno. So I never got to reach the deep blue #peak because I came from the West. Had I come from the North it wouldn’t have been a problem.

(but Iat least I have seen Castro’s headquarters!)

Why are tankies so blind to what they’re doing? How can they worship dictators like the Kim dynasty, Stalin, Mao Zedong, Castro, Maduro, and vanguards like the CPSU?

It doesn’t make sense, if you want the working class to be free, why are you idolizing authoritarian rulers?

What the hell is happening here? This blind devotion and cult-like behavior is downright insane.

Today in Labor History April 13, 1953: CIA Director Allen Dulles launched the MKUltra mind control program. The program ran from 1953 to 1973. It involved giving human subjects LSD and other drugs, often without their knowledge. Then, researchers would try to “weaken” their minds and force confessions through brainwashing and psychological torture. Over 7,000 U.S. war veterans were unwitting test subjects, as well as many Canadian and U.S. civilians. The program was a continuation of Nazi mind-control experiments, which utilized mescaline against Jews and Soviet prisoners, hoping it could be exploited as a “truth” serum. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS), precursor of the CIA, recruited many of these Nazi torturers in the wake of World War II to exploit their knowledge and research. MKUltra was headed by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, who later devised plans to kill Fidel Castro with an exploding cigar, and saturating his shoes with radioactive thallium to make his beard fall out. He also tried to assassinate Patrice Lumumba, Prime Minister of Congo, with poison. Several well-known liberals and radicals knowingly participated in MKUltra and its OSS predecessors, either as test subjects (e.g., Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Hunter), or as researchers (e.g., anthropologists Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson). Others who have been alleged to have been victims or volunteers include Sirhan Sirhan, Ted Kaczyinski, Charles Manson, and Whitey Bulger.

For a really fascinating look at Margaret Mead's and Gregory Bateson’s exploration with hallucinogens and their connection to MKUltra, check out the recent book, Tripping on Utopia, by Benjamin Breen. And for a truly amazing documentary on the 1961 CIA-supported coup in Congo, check out the 2024 documentary, “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat.” But the film is really about so much more than the coup. It covers Cold War machinations, propaganda, and covert operations in the early 1960s; the superpowers’ jockeying for control of puppet regimes and spheres of influence in the global south; the Pan-African movement; racism in the U.S., the Civil Rights movement, and the repression against it; and, of course, jazz music, including tons of interviews and live footage of Lumumba, Ghanian president and revolutionary Kwame Nkrumah, activist and writer Andree Madeleine Blouin, Malcolm X, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Miriam Makeba, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, surrealist artist Rene Magritte.
