What he wants is to renegotiate the #Guantanamo base lease. $500 a year is too much Donald says. Maybe $450?

I remember #Castro kept a wall with all the rent checks as he refused cashing any of them.

1 negative : glass ; 5 x 7 in. or smaller. | Photograph shows Cipriano Castro (1858-1924), the former president and dictator of Venezuela, probably at Ellis Island. (Source: Flickr Commons project, 2014)

Ellis Island is an island in New York Harbor, within the U.S. states of New Jersey and New York. Owned by the U.S. government, Ellis Island was once the busiest immigrant inspection and processing station in the United States. From 1892 to 1954, nearly 12 million immigrants arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey were processed there; as many as two-fifths of Americans may be descended from these immigrants. It has been part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument since 1965 and is accessible to the public only by ferry. The north side of the island is a national museum of immigration, while the south side of the island, including the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital, is open to the public through guided tours.

The image is a black-and-white photograph of a man standing on a set of stone steps, holding a newspaper in his left hand. He is wearing formal attire, which includes a dark coat, a tie, a white shirt, and a wide-brimmed hat. The man appears to be middle-aged and has a mustache. The background shows a building with a large window and a door, and there is a potted plant hanging from the side of the building. The photograph has a label in the upper left corner that reads "C. CASTRO," and there is a number "3919-8" in the upper right corner. The style of the clothing and the quality of the photograph suggest it is from the early 20th century.

José Cipriano Castro Ruiz was a Venezuelan politician and officer of the military who served as president from 1899 to 1908. He was the first man from the Venezuelan Andes to rule the country, and was the first of four military strongmen from the Andean state of Táchira to rule the country over the next 46 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cipriano

The image is a black-and-white photograph depicting a group of individuals, likely from the early 20th century, gathered at what appears to be a ferry landing area. The setting is outdoors, with a sign in the background reading "ELLIS ISLAND FERRY." The individuals are dressed in formal attire, typical of the era, with many wearing suits, hats, and overcoats. The men in the foreground are walking in a line, with one person in the center wearing a top hat and a coat, seemingly leading the group. The scene conveys a sense of organized movement, possibly a group of officials or dignitaries arriving at or departing from Ellis Island. The photo has a vintage quality, with a caption at the bottom that reads "CASTRO LANDING," which may indicate the specific location or event being documented. The overall atmosphere suggests a formal and possibly historical occasion.

The image is a black-and-white portrait of a man wearing formal attire. He is dressed in a high-crowned top hat and a fur-trimmed coat, suggesting a formal or historical setting. The man has a full beard and is looking slightly to his right. The background is slightly out of focus, emphasizing the subject. There is text at the top right corner of the image that reads "CASTRO," and there is a stamp or mark on the right edge of the image, along with a number sequence "2613-5" near the bottom right. The photograph appears to be from an earlier era, possibly the late 19th or early 20th century, judging by the style of clothing and photographic quality.

Telex from Cuba is the 2008 debut novel by writer Rachel Kushner. The novel follows a group of anglo-expatriates living in Cuba during the Cuban Revolution and was loosely based on Kushner's mother's experience growing up in Cuba on territory occupied by the United Fruit Company. - Wikipedia

I found this much harder to get into than Creation Lake as it lacked a central character, but it was worth the effort, and now know more about Cuba before the revolution, at least from the point of view of the privileged Americans working and living there.
