Image of one of the three accessible Bronze Age burial cairns at Balnuran of Clava in the Scots Highlands, looking toward the setting sun, now just a few days after Midwinter. The passages to the cairns are lined up to capture the Midwinter Winter Solstice sunset - date of the image is December 28, 2025, so one week past the solstice. Image shows the stones of the westernmost of the cairns, looking out from the center through the passage. Standing stones also grace all three cairns and the rest of the place. It is quite moving.

Aviemore 'Clava' cairn; the remains of a kerbed cairn (which likely had a central mound and chamber), surrounded by a free-standing stone circle. It's in a neat little suburban setting now, with glimpses of the Cairngorm mountains beyond.

The magnificent Balnuaran of Clava for today's #StandingStoneSunday. Three large cairns, each surrounded by stone circles, in the Nairn valley near Culloden. There is also a small kerbed cairn. Several of the stones are decorated with cup-marks. The site has given us the 'Clava cairn' type for a group of cairns spread over an area from the Cairngorms to the Black Isle. Just wonderful.

Mains of Clava North East for today's #StandingStoneSunday. A six foot plus single stone, it's possible there was a cairn here as well. It stands in a field a little to the northeast of the wonderful Clava cairns, in the Nairn valley near Culloden.

A suburban setting for today's #StandingStoneSunday offering;

Aviemore cairn and stone circle in the Scottish Highlands. A monument of the 'Clava' type, a kerb of stones enclosing a (now gone) burial cairn, with a surrounding stone circle. It's in a little suburban street now, but has views towards the Cairngorms.

A wide circle of low, contiguous stones in a grassy area. Some taller stones stand behind, the remains of an outer stone circle. Trees, a high suburban hedge and a bungalow form the backdrop. It's all very neat and tidy. The sun is shining and the sky is blue, with only some high altitude streaks of cloud.
