"Down Under" is a song recorded by #Australian #rock band #MenAtWork. It was originally self-released in 1980 as the #Bside to their first local single, "Keypunch Operator", before the band signed a recording contract with #ColumbiaRecords. Both early songs were written by the group's co-founders, #ColinHay and #RonStrykert. The early version of "#DownUnder" has a slightly slower tempo and different arrangement from the later Columbia release.

#ColinHay’s still too busy for your Vegemite jokes. Fierce Mercy bloomed out of sunrise photos and a certain age creeping in. “You never really leave it behind,” he says. “It’s all just so present.” Retirement? Not even on the menu.

If you need him, he’ll be writing love songs and dodging questions about 1983.

Hey SFBA, a musician who has been on my radar is Colin Hay.

If you are old like me, you might remember him from Men At Work. If you are less old, you might only know him from a guest appearance on Scrubs.

He'll play 2 shows in the SF Bay area on January 24 & 25.

I might go to one or both.

Sunday of quiet contemplation. Well. Not entirely quiet. Listening to #colinhay 's more recent records.

A last one from Colin Hay. My all-time favourite.
The video quality is crap, but that does not matter.
Just listen. Yes, the whole text.

Down Under

Traveling in a fried-out Kombi
On a hippie trail head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said

"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and man plunder
Can′t you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover"

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six-foot-four and full of muscle
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich
And he said

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and man chunder
Can′t you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover"

Beautiful World

My, my, my it′s a beautiful world
I like swimming in the sea
I like to go out beyond the white breakers
Where a man can still be free
Or a woman if you are one
I like swimming in the sea

Oh my, my, my it's a beautiful world
I like drinking Irish tea
With a little bit of Lapsang Souchong
I like making my own tea

Oh my, my, my it′s a beautiful world
I like driving in my car
I'll roll the top down, sometimes I travel quite far
And drive to the ocean and stare up at the stars
I like driving in my car

All around is anger
And automatic guns
It's death in large numbers
No respect for women or our little ones
I tried talking to Jesus
But He just put me on hold
Said, "He′d been swamped by calls this week
He could not shake His cold"

And still this emptiness persists
Perhaps this is as good as it gets
You′ve given up the drink
And those nasty cigarettes
I leave the party early, at least with no regrets
I watch the sun as it comes up, I watch it as it sets
Yeah, this is as good as it gets

So my, my, my it's a beautiful world
I like swimming in the sea
I like to go out beyond the white breakers
Where a man can still be free
Or a woman if you are one
I like swimming in the sea
Yeah

Ted Tocks Covers - Year 7 - Day 37

Waterloo Sunset

An English classic released on this day in 1967.

“Dirty old river, must you keep rolling
Flowing into the night?
People so busy, make me feel dizzy
Taxi light shines so bright
But I don't need no friends
As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset
I am in paradise”

LISTEN LOCAL
WTSA
Mastodon Post

Totally by accident, leading up to today's noon news break, I came in on the end of the first episode of WTSA's new local music program, "Listen Local."

wtsaradio.com/listen-local/

"Listen Local" features music by local acts and by other acts playing locally.  The show is hosted by Mitch Harrison of Next Chapter Records in Putney, Vermont. Local bands named under the "Episode One" heading are Whiskey Treaty Roadshow and Jake McKelvie and the Countertops. Non-local acts named are Colin Hay, Carsie Blanton, Ellis Paul, Lucy Kaplansky, and Amythyst Kiah.

WTSA has a mobile app. In fact, I haven't listened any other way in a very long time.

If the program has gotten a lot of fanfare so far, I am not aware of it. A search of Facebook's Southern Vermont Music Scene, for instance, turned up no references to it. Maybe this Mastodon post can help.

:::

"Overkill" is a song by Australian pop rock band #MenAtWork. It was released in March 1983 as the second single from their second studio album #Cargo. Written by lead singer #ColinHay, it peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100; No. 5 on the Australian #KentMusicReport Singles Chart; and top 10 in #Canada, #Ireland, and #Norway. The song was a departure from the group's style of #reggae-influenced pop rock, featuring a melancholic feel musically and lyrically.

Finished S1, then just now finished S2 E1. Quite a cracker! I really really enjoyed the running joke of #ColinHay (of #MenAtWork) guesting as a roving troubadour; hilarious ep.

The #misogyny hasn't let up unfortunately, but i'm trying hard to ignore it & focus on the many good traits of this clever series.

Stylistically it is quite reminding me of #GilmoreGirls, i think, so that's a good bonus.
