Do you live in the #UK and want to see the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy? Then when you’re in #London next, pop along to the #ScienceMuseum, where you can see the #Apollo10 #CommandModule. Not enough people know that it’s there, nor that it still holds the record for being the fastest crewed #spacecraft or any #vehicle, for that matter, to date.

#SpaceSaturday: The #Apollo 14 Command Module, named Kitty Hawk for the first place a heavier-than-air aircraft took off, just decades before #spacecraft took people to the #Moon.
#KittyHawk is on display at the #museum at the Kennedy #Space Center Visitors Complex’s Apollo/Saturn V Center, alongside a full-sized #SaturnV #rocket. It was recovered from the Pacific Ocean after landing by the USS New Orleans.
It sent Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell to the Moon, and Stuart Roosa into lunar orbit along on #KittyHawk.

The hatch is open, allowing the view of the complex opening system and inside the capsule. “The #Apollo4 Mission” (1967) - YouTube

This is an interesting documentary of the first #unmanned #flight of the #Apollo programme. From it, I learned that the reentry of the #CommandModule was done in two stages with an initial descent, followed by a partial ascent to cool off and then a final descent to the surface.
