Lovely day for winter gardening: we took an electric barrow load of community compost for a ride along the river over to support our neighbours at Crossroads Community Garden in Footscray.

They immediately put it to good use!

Looking forward to a Spring garden refresh with the Davis Street Community Garden volunteers this afternoon! Lots of life in the garden, plants to harvest and replace, and a load of well-matured community compost ready to turn into the soil…

We are growing a garden for wildlife, which already attracts butterflies, lacewings, geckos, and more! Thanks to TreeProject (www.treeproject.org.au) for donating locally indigenous plant species, including:
- Acacias
- Banksias
- Native Indigo
- Kangaroo Apples

3 Nov will be our last Wildlife Gardening session for 2024 before it gets too hot. Gardeners are also welcome to take seedlings for their own plantings.

Busy day yesterday at our monthly Wildlife Gardening Working Bee - mulching and planting and coffee in the Spring sunshine.

We have put out a variety of indigenous habitat plants: grasses, ground covers, and climbing plants along the fence line. Great work and massive thanks to our community volunteers for working to make a difference, and to create habitat for biodiversity in our urban environment!

A lovely mild Winter’s morning to enjoy #CoffeeAndCompost. Nice change after the cold rain and gusty wind… thankfully nothing appears to have blown away yesterday! We have finished #compost batches to screen, and new batches to turn.

Watching the piles of wood mulch quietly steaming at dawn. What a beautiful day to conserve some local nutrients and make a stack-ton of compost as a community…

Have an amazing week everyone!

Great work by our volunteer wildlife gardeners revegetating a monoculture lawn.

We planted Knobby Club-rush (Ficinia nodosa), Blue Tussock-grass (Poa poiformis), Magenta Stork's-bill (Pelargonium rodneyanum) and Small-leaved Clematis (Clematis microphylla).

We salvaged a fence being demolished nearby to send to landfill. The project is converting this to a vermin-proof hot composting station to expand capacity for processing organics.

Right now, carefully de-nailing by hand to make the materials safe to handle and store at our open-access compost hub, and putting steel aside for recycling.
