#ComputationalModels

2025-05-09

The #Tolman "sunburst maze" results (from 1946) are often used to demonstrate shortcut ability in rats... but do they really? More on this later!

For now, would you know of any #ComputationalModels that were tested in this protocol (whether they replicate the original results or not)? We know of a few (well... 4) but would like to make sure we are not missing any.

Schematic of the sunburst maze in its test version, with a central circular platform, a blocked "learned" path, and several radiating arms from the center, one of them is a shortcut to the food location.

Large language models are universal biomedical simulators
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

LLMs such as GPT-4 have proven surprisingly successful for a wide range of tasks. We explore the potential of leveraging LLMs as simulators of biological systems.

This text-based simulation paradigm is well-suited for modeling & understanding complex living systems difficult to describe with physics-based 1st-principle simulations

Microplastics stick around in human airways
sciencedaily.com/releases/2023

Inhaled microplastics can pose serious health risks; understanding how they travel in the respiratory system is essential for prevention & treatment of respiratory diseases. Researchers developed a computational fluid dynamics model to analyze microplastic transport & deposition in the upper airway. ...

The challenge for #ComputationalScience: present our results in a way that generates trust. In spite of software being buggy (as everybody knows and accepts). In spite of all of us relying on brittle infrastructure (reminder: xkcd.com/2347/). In spite of #ComputationalModels becoming too complex for any individual to understand (even before machine learning).
