In #Castlebar, few people want to go on the record about the #BurkeFamily.

The town's fundamentalist fugitives #MartinaBurke and #AmmiBurke are nowhere to be seen. The duo are sentenced to a fortnight of imprisonment for #ContemptOfCourt, like Ammi's brother #EnochBurke who is held indefinitely held for repeated #trespass.

#JusticeCregan called it a "family circus". Who wants to be caught up in that?

#MartinaBurke & #AmmiBurke have been sentenced to 2 wks in prison for #contemptofcourt after repeatedly shouting in the #HighCourt.

Judge Cregan called it "a paradigmatic case of contempt" & said it was time to end the circus.

The #BurkeFamily court strategy is clear: Show up. Shout over the judge. Get removed by Gardaí, then whine when the court responds.

In a democracy, everyone is entitled to views.

But no one is above the law. The court is not their stage.

Solicitor #TerryGorry has published an update on the #EnochBurke / #BurkeFamily circus, following the sentencing on Wednesday of Enoch's mammy #MartinaBurke & his sister #AmmiBurke.

The two women were jailed for two weeks for their #ContemptOfCourt on 20th February. It was latest incident in a long line of court disruptions by the Burkes.

Judge Cregan said it was "long past time for the court to call a halt to this family circus".

He said the Burkes had been treated with great forbearance by the courts but the situation where ten gardaí had to be present in court during Burke-related cases was completely abnormal and could not continue.

10. I would like to make it clear to Mr. Burke what he must do to purge his contempt and to be released from prison.

11. He must give an undertaking to the court that he will not enter on, or trespass on, the school’s property again without the school’s consent. That is all. (The issue of outstanding fines will however remain).

12. He does not have to give any undertaking that he will follow the school principal’s direction to call a child ‘they’ or ‘them’. He does not have to stop protesting against transgenderism. He does not have to change his religious beliefs one iota.

13. The idea that Mr. Burke is being imprisoned because of his religious beliefs is nonsense. This court does not imprison people for their religious beliefs. Mr. Burke is being imprisoned because he is trespassing on other people’s property. No more. No less.

14. Any statements by Mr. Burke, or his family, that he is being imprisoned because of his opposition to transgenderism are demonstrably false.

15. As I said in my first judgment, Mr. Burke has the keys to his own prison. He only has to give an undertaking that he will obey court orders – like every other citizen in the country."

#EnochBurke was returned to prison today, after he again refused to purge his #ContemptOfCourt. Mr Justice Brian Cregan told Burke that he will stay in prison until his contempt is purged. No release for Christmas or Easter. Next review of imprisonment: 3rd March.

#JusticeCregan warned the Burke family that they'd be removed from court if there was any disruption. So they behaved.
