I would agree, "hope is not a strategy" (see "Rule 1).

Yet, in a #crisis, hope should be a part of your strategy.

Crisis #leaders need to be direct and not sugarcoat critical situations. But hope is important.

You want to "Inspire your team with aligned interests" (Rule 5)? Include hope.

Build back better? Include hope.

Strengthen community (or organizational) bonds? Include hope.

I've often noted that #rural #EmergencyManagement is NOT urban EM with fewer resources. Rural risk is different. Rural capacity is different. Rural #preparedness & response is different.

Here is another example of why the #PublicSafety community needs to participate in community development decisions. There's a way to work on issues collaboratively that address the issue at hand AND ensure ongoing #safety and #preparedness.

I'm a believer in "all #disasters start & end local." Yet, I also fully understand how the feds can't completely divest from #DisasterRecovery.

Where's the middle ground?

Insightful perspective on #crisisleadership.

"...volatile environments can't be controlled and attempts to do so will burn you out." ~ S. Legena (per article interview)

The implications for leaders include acceptance and being mindful about which parts of situations they try to control (through a construct like "command").

To frame a little reflection on:

- The intersection of #crisismanagement and inclusion/exclusion,

- Cascading impacts from #crises,

- How an "incident" and a "crisis" are not the same thing, and

- How crisis managers can't live and work in bubbles.

My research on sharing #leadership when responding to #disasters is in this same vein. I focus less on inspiration and more on encouraging subordinates in a command structure to speak up and contribute ideas.

Yet, the premise of this article holds true: people matter.

Even (and especially) in a #crisis, treating people like people matters.

Good read and better insight from Route Fifty and the Urban Institute.

Rural communities aren't afraid of collaboration; there's a fair amount of evidence they rely on their social ties for all sorts of actions. Looking forward to more exploration of this matter.

I love teaching in a strategic leadership program, not only for the interactions w/ students, but also for the reflections it prompts in my chosen field of #crisismanagement.

Yes, leading during #crisis or disasters is different than leading during regular periods, but there are overlapping lessons. When I think of strategy and "how you win," I think of the trade offs an incident commander or CEO needs to make to mitigate running #disaster impacts.

This article is one of the most accessible pieces I've read that discusses how to integrate #systemsthinking into actual #decisionmaking. And...bonus for me, it's relevant to #crisismanagement.

Check it out!

Sustained crises differ from sudden crises. Regarding #crisisleadership and #emergencymanagement, this article is a brief, informative read.

These ideas neatly mirror what I explored in my dissertation in 2016 and 2017. I'm glad to see a more collective style of leading appearing in the discourse. Key skills: (a) communicate openly & transparently, (b) be trustworthy, (c) use your team's perspectives, (d) embrace agility & learning, and (e) lead by example. #leadership

I would extend this discussion to include not just #adaptability, but also adaptive #leadership. Adaptive leadership requires a value-laden foundation and honed meaning making skills. Adaptive leaders help their teams "psychologically and emotional align themselves" (Beerel, 2021, p. 219) with changing situations.

Prepare yourself to be adaptable. AND prepare your team with adaptive leadership.

Quick read, but thoughtful piece covering a lot of ground. Most interesting to #emergencymanager types are the severe weather, #climate, and security independent variables along with #BusinessContinuity and cybersecurity as dependent variables.

A longitudinal study in a post-disaster environment is a good thing; these are needed. Health, migration, ecological resilience, leadership effectiveness...all should be studied. Small sample + attrition will be a challenge, but still I'll be following.
