I’m always grateful that Apple releases new iPhones in September. It comes during the period when supermarkets are stocking up on pumpkins, gourds and other Cucurbits. Obviously one of the first things you check out on a new iPhone is whatever changes and improvements Apple makes to the cameras, and these colorful counters are a great location to do so.

Here’s a few shots taken during a supermarket tour playing around with different camera settings and what Apple now calls Photographic Styles. First up is just a series of photos in a gallery all using the Standard setting.

Following the Continue Reading break below are two videos showing off the differences in Photographic Styles Apple offers and more photos.

Photographic Styles in Photos

After importing these photos into Photos on my Mac, I scrolled through the different Styles available. Given my aging eyes, I can see those differences between each Style easier on that device. Some of the differences seem small, some quite distinct, but the Style called Quiet is anything but. I’ve set my preferences to use the Standard style, which is a touch warmer than what Apple calls Natural. Apple defaults to Standard as well. The theory of the system is you can set up your preference with the Style you want.

I’ve yet to really explore the different Tones Apple offers within the Camera controls, but to be honest I’m not one to spend much time manipulating photos beyond occasionally stripping the color out of an image to make it Black & White.

Below is a gallery offering the different Camera selections .5x, 1x, 2X, and 5x all taken without me moving.

I’ll have more to say on the iPhone 16 Pro, photography, Sonoma, and other aspects of this fall’s releases in the days to come. That includes the Camera Control Button on the iPhone 16, with as a teaser I think is an intriguing overreach for most users. Stay tuned.

#Cucurbita maxima 'Red Warty Thing', originally introduce by John Howard Gregory of Massachusetts in 1897 as 'Victor Winter Squash' and recently repopularised under its new name. It's thought to have been an accidental cross between a Hubbard squash and a pumpkin; Gregory is also credited with breeding 'Blue Hubbard'.

Diversity of maxima-pumpkin are high this year thanks to a seed grex from a colleague in France. I will arrange a theme day at culinary school and make chef students taste and evaluate the fruit. Then we’ll prioritize the best as parents for next years plants. Which kind of pumpkins are your favorite to eat?
