Once again, the final #DeltaIVHeavy #launch is upon us.
The #DeltaIV has always been, in my opinion, the classiest looking EELV.

The #Delta IV and its predecessors have made incredible contributions to #science and #spaceflight.

A #ThorDelta launched #Echo1, the first comm #satellite. #DeltaII launched missions to #Mars and began building the #GPS system.

The Delta family will be missed.

An outdoor, night time photograph of a rocket on its launch pad. The rocket has a central cylinder that has orange foam on the bottom and white above. Two shorter cylinders are attached to the central orange core and are orange themselves except for white nose cones.
There is a white hanger in the background, and truss connections to the rocket from the right side of the image. An outdoor, daytime photograph of a white rocket against a blue sky with other rockets in the background, all held in place by wires.
The central rocket is white and is a cylinder with a narrowing top, which turns into a narrow cylinder that has a large "bud" on the top.
Behind it are two other rockets, one white and one gray and white and black.
The center rocket has the words "UNITED STATES" written vertically in black letters. An outdoor photograph of a teal colored rocket against the clear blue sky.
The rocket is a cylinder with teal pain, and has three smaller cylinders with nose cones attacked around it. Above the teal section is a white cone-like shape that holds the payload.

The #engine compartment of a #Delta II launch #vehicle.
The #DeltaII’s main #engine was a #Rocketdyne RS-27 #rocket engine derived from engines going back to before the Saturn I.
The #RS27 can be supplemented by up to 9 Solid Rocket Boosters.
Three #SRB’s are installed on this display of the last Delta II #LaunchVehicle remaining. It’s on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex.

An outdoor, daylight photograph of the bottom and engine section of a Delta II rocket. The base is painted bright white with black numbers around it. A bell-shaped nozzle extends down from the white base, with two orange rectangular projections point down and away from the center. On the two sides there are two smaller white cylinders.

After United Launch Alliance launched their final #Delta II #rocket for #NASA, the remaining #DeltaII was donated to the Kennedy #Space Center Visitors Complex for public display.
#ULA painted a few significant logos from the vehicle’s career on the donated first stage, including the US flag, the Delta series logo (a Greek letter delta), stars surrounding the Delta to represent successful missions, the #ULA logo, and the #NASA #Meatball logo.

A #refurbished #S-3D #rocket #engine at #NASA’s Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building.
The S-3D #RocketEngine influenced many of its successors, including the engines that powered the #Saturn I and #Delta II #launch #vehicles. It was used on the Atlas, Thor-Delta, and many other rockets. Its influence on #US rocketry.

The #Thor #Missile was the first operational #BallisticMissile of the United States.
As an Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile, when stationed in Europe, it could deliver a nuclear warhead to Moscow.
The Thor also served as part of the Thor-#Able #space #launch #vehicle.
And the Thor components continued in the #Delta family of #rockets long after the missile’s retirement.
The two truss towers on either side of the white rocket are the service structures for the #DeltaII, the last legacy of the #Thor family.
After the Delta II was retired, both towers where demolished in 2018 to prevent an uncontrolled collapse due to corrosion.

A landscape photograph with a tall rocket dominating the foreground. The rocket is mounted vertically and has one engine nozzle at the bottom and four fins. The rocket rises as a white cylinder, until it starts to narrow until it reaches the very thin second stage. At the top it gets wider again, which is the payload fairing.
Two truss towers are in the background, behind a treeline, one on the left and one on the right of the rocket in the center.

A #photograph of the last #DeltaII #rocket, produced by #Boeing and finally #launched by the United Launch Alliance or #ULA, was given to the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex #KSC #rocketgarden.
The #Delta II is painted in a #sharknose livery it never flew in, along with the #US flag, #NASA emblem, and the Delta family’s signature #triangle and a #star for each successful #launch (153 of 155).

During a tour of #NASA’s Kennedy Space Center #KSC, #journalists and #photographers were brought to a room to be shown some hardware. It was completely ignored in favor of the #restored S-3D #rocket #engine. The presentation was derailed, much to the chagrin of NASA’s Press Office.
But really, it was their fault. They basically brought a bunch of magpies into a room with something shiny. What did they expect to happen? For us not to gawk at the #shiny #rocket #engine?
And then they didn’t even tell us anything about it. They just gave their presentation while glaring at the magpies they willfully brought into a room with a rocket engine in the corner.
The S-3D is an #ancestor of many engines. It powered the #Atlas rocket until the Atlas III, the #Saturn I & IB, the #Thor missile/#SLV, and became the #Rocketdyne RS-27 on the #Delta and #DeltaII #rockets.
