@KoolTechLord только #edlin, только хардкор!
Modern computers have tons of memory & disk. My desktop PC has 32GB memory and ¼TB NVME storage.
It's hard for some to imagine what programming was like when memory was counted in kilobytes and disks were single digit megabytes.
Here's a demonstration using #FreeDOS with 640kb memory and 5MB disk, using just #edlin and a C compiler to write programs. 🤓

After a few weeks of procrastination, I finally took the time to read up on how to use EDLIN.COM. There's simply no way around it if you want to work with early versions of DOS from the 80s.
This here is me adding a few new lines to the AUTOEXEC.BAT of an IBM DOS 3.30. It ain't much, but it works! 😃
#Edlin in assembler is downright unreadable.
Make file has no unit tests... that would have to wait decade more.
@Waitnwallflower
Did you ever use EDLIN?
I go way back. I have a son older that Mark Zuckerberg .
Bill Gates and I went to different schools together..
I think, for me, much like EDLIN, it's pretty much always been a matter of knowing that it was the default editor available in every incarnation of #UNIX and #Linux since, ... I dunno, ... 4.2BSD or so?
Perhaps I should say vi, and in DOS I don't really recall when EDIT.COM supplanted #EDLIN, but do feel free to checkout my friend's more modern #FREDLIN in the link above. h/t to @dheadshot for creating a POSIX interpretation of that classic utility from the days when disk drives talked to you and diskettes shimmied...
Also, These #Vim memes are some of the funnest elbows to the ribs of the person sitting next to you we can all enjoy together... unless, unless, Oh my gawd am I on Drugs?
Here's another one for folks to add to their collections, for foshizzles and giggles, of course, and we all can haz #Cheezburgerz! 🍔
Kindest regards, and thank you for some of the very best cookbook style #tuts, #HowTo's, and introspectives for the UNIX / Linux / FOSS world on the Internet :)

Nice find in a charity shop today #Edlin #TreesWoodsandMan
Hard to believe, but after all these years, I found a setting in Windows Explorer I hadn't noticed before.
It might not always have been there, I no longer repair PCs for folks, so I stopped studying every possible thing you could do to break one.
The feature may have come with an upgrade.
So, my explorer locked up a few times, which cased me to look further, and I see t his tiny √ and there were options! Nothing I need, it was just new to me.
@mattdagley I remember Quick Basic! Long ago. When I had just purchased DOS 4 (no one used it) and then 5 came out, so I went from 3-5, ditching 4. They bundled this with OS sometimes.
I go way back.. #EDLIN was my Word Processor.
Another gorgeous machine at the #CentreForComputingHistory running #DOS3. Tried to leave some documentation for the next visitors so they could at least save a text file in #edlin. Slow refresh rate made the cathode ray monitor a little hard to capture.
@elb I've never needed to use ed, but this does remind me of #edlin on #DOS. A bit of Wikipedia spelunking tells me that edlin is a descendent of ed, interesting.
It is interesting to live in a world where programming languages are designed around the assumption that the user has features like auto-indent. I hadn't stopped to think about how annoying it would be to edit, say, Python with nano or joe or anything else without a Python mode.
