I just published v0.99 of #jSH, a #JavaScript scripting environment for #MSDOS. This is the 'little' text-mode brother to #DOjS.

#DOSember isn't JUST about gaming, so I want to celebrate the season by doing something new to me: giving #FreeDOS a try! I've known about it for ages but I've never actually used it before. I'm going to give it a try in 86Box, and once I've got a feel for it there I'll set it up on my Win98 machine.

It seems to have a nice package collection and I get the impression that dev and networking on it are pretty solid. And of course we'll do some gaming!

👾However, letting silly things like segmented memory and mismatched memory addresses deter us from pleasing said intrusive thoughts would be beyond the pale. Ergo we get a shining example of how days of rewriting code, stripping code, debugging code, fixing alignment issues in code and writing work-arounds for newly discovered issues in code can ultimately lead to the proud moment where FreeDOS boots on the GBA.👾

Granted it takes over an hour to do so, and has to be started from a butchered Pokémon Emerald save file, courtesy of a well-known exploit in that game, thankfully preserved in counterfeit cartridges.

👾Admittedly I’m not sure what practical applications there are for FreeDOS on the GBA, but that’s never stopped hackers from taking on impossible projects before, so there’s no sense letting it get in the way now.👾

Quick n Dirty teaser video of my overkill FreeDOS machine. I'll be making a more detailed video on the hardware and software at some point. The entire point is to get hundreds of FPS in DOS games, with a real ISA sound card. And CubicPlayer. I also have a nearly identical system in the living room built in a HTPC case for those CubicPlayer needs. Specs:
