#EduCHI2023 was awesome, and I can't wait to see the future of the #EduCHI community.

It was overnight in my time zone so I was too sleep deprived to post to all the socials simultaneously, alas.

She is an Assistant Professor at the College of Design at North Carolina State University. She is co-Chair of the Pluriversal Design Special Interest Group of the Design Research Society. She is one of the co-editors of The Black Experience in Design for Allworth (2022) and has created several design tools for critical reflection such as The Designer’s Critical Alphabet and the Positionality Wheel.Class details:
UX designers and practitioners acknowledge users’ different skills and try to address their needs to design better products and experiences. As HCI educators, we searched for tools to help our students to recognize that they might have different perspectives from the users they will be designing for, generating bias and assumptions in the design process. Positionality refers to the personal and social constructs that define our identity, shaping how we see and interpret the world around us, as well as the way the world sees and interprets us. Practicing positionality in HCI education is a meaningful way to reflect on our teaching approaches, our measures and expectations of students’ performance and engagement. For the students, learning about positionality and reflexivity can have an impact on their design work and research, raising awareness on relationships of power and subjectivity. MacDonald is an Associate Professor in the School of Information at Pratt Institute where he also directs the Center for Digital Experiences, a student-driven UX consultancy, and academic research lab. His research focuses on strengthening organizational UX practices and improving HCI and UX education. He is one of the three developers of the model and is currently teaching a graduate-level course devoted to design systems.Instructor: Cynthia Putnam is an Associate Professor at DePaul University’s College of Computing and Digital Media. She teaches in the graduate human-computer interaction program (HCI). Her research interests are in HCI pedagogy and accessible computing. She is one of the three developers of the model and teaches graduate students how to create their own design systems.Class Details:
A design system is a collection of documented elements that embody the design principles and rules of an organization. They also typically include reusable components and patterns (typography, color palettes, form elements, etc.) that designers and developers can use to efficiently create uniform and consistent user interfaces (UIs) across an organization’s suite of digital products. Although design systems are increasingly common in industry, few academic programs are teaching students about design systems.

In this Master Class, we will present a model for teaching design systems that is meant to be flexible and scalable to a variety of educational contexts. Attendees will come away with a deeper understanding of what design systems are and where they came from and ideas for how they can incorporate design systems into their teaching practice.

Class Details:
In this masterclass, we will seek to bring together the knowledge contained in key texts commonly used in HCI education and the evident pedagogical challenges that underlie codified methods knowledge.

Such fundamental questions at this intersection include:
What kind of knowledge do methods contain?
How do students learn about methods?
and How do we know when students have sufficient knowledge of methods to continue engaging in adaptation, use, and creation in the future?

We will collaboratively address these questions, laying the groundwork for participants to consider the following issues in their own curriculum.A photo of a person with short dark hair. Instructor: Colin M. Gray is an Associate Professor at Purdue University and leads an undergraduate program and graduate concentration in UX Design. Their research focuses on the ways in which the pedagogy and practice of designers informs the development of design ability, particularly in relation to ethics, design knowledge, and professional identity formation. Their research on design methods includes a range of practice-led work to describe how practitioners engage with design methods, a theoretical vocabulary to engage with methods, and practical implications for HCI and design educators to consider when building students’ methods knowledge.A photo of a person with short hair. Text: Instructor: Paul C. Parsons is an Associate Professor at Purdue University and teaches in an undergraduate program and graduate concentration in UX Design. His research focuses on cognitive aspects of design and use of interactive artifacts, with a focus on data visualization interfaces. His research on design methods includes inquiry into which methods visualization designers are familiar with and use, how they make judgments about methods use in their work, and how design knowledge is codified into guidelines and used in practice.

She has been teaching at Cornell since 2010, including teaching a large introductory Human-Computer Interaction Design class (200 students) since 2015. Making prototyping decisions is one topic in her class that she has developed over the years and adapted over time to fit students’ needs.A photo of several shoes made from modeling clay. Class details: In this Master Class, we will cover two dimensions along which it is useful to make informed decisions for creating prototypes: (1) Filtering decisions relate to what elements of the design are included in the prototype. (2) Implementation decisions relate to how to create the prototype.

Please bring any of the following craft supplies to this virtual event: Play-Doh (or another modeling compound), aluminum foil, cardboard (e.g., a cereal box) + scissors + markers + glue/tape, etc.
