#ElectronicsKit

@JamesRandolph Took a picture of my first Heathkit, an AM Portable Transistor Radio too. Probably still have the Manual, but I'm not going on an archaeology dig to get it for a photo😬

It used REAL batteries too. Multiple C or D cells, don't remember which for sure, just that they lasted a loooong time👍

Simple Heathkit Portable Transistor Radio. Very basic pseudo brownish leather case, handle on top and two knobs (On-Off-Volume, Station Selector) on front.

(The display looks way brighter in person, for some reason it messes with cameras but not with my eyes. 😅) #InTheLabDoingStuff #RetroChipTesterPro #ElectronicsKit

It works, too! (Except for one little mistake I made, everything was perfect first try!) #InTheLabDoingStuff #RetroChipTesterPro #ElectronicsKit

Here’s the thing in all its glory. Not going to show the punk rock look I gave the "user interface" yet, you’re going to have to wait for the video. No spoilers. 🙃#InTheLabDoingStuff #GuitarFX #Echoflanger #DandyHorse #ElectronicsKit #Soldering

The Dandy Horse guitar effect PCB all populated and wired up in the aluminum enclosure that is going to be the stomp box it’s meant to be. The bottom lid is missing so all connections to the switch and audio/DC jacks are visible.

Sorry for the silence, needed some days to do real life things. (Ironically, large parts of the internet seem to be down because of that famous update gone wrong today… 😅) I managed to get my guitar effect to work in the meantime. It was quite the journey but it sounds amazing. Editing the video now so you can all suffer through the build with me soon. 😉 #InTheLabDoingStuff #GuitarFX #Echoflanger #DandyHorse #ElectronicsKit #Soldering

My workbench with several tools scattered about. The guitar effect circuit board is in the center with an oscilloscope probe hooked up for biasing the circuit. The scope in the background shows a square wave on the screen (which is the oscillator signal for the modulation effects).

Moar progress. Hooked up to my bench power supply, the voltages at the test points read correctly. Hooray! Now for the intricate biasing procedures…🤞 #InTheLabDoingStuff #GuitarFX #Echoflanger #DandyHorse #ElectronicsKit #Soldering

A Dandy Horse guitar effect PCB on my workbench with all the components populated. Some clip leads are connected to the power input for setting up the circuit correctly.

Progress so far. I tend to forget just how long building these kits takes until I actually do it. Mostly looking neat so far, except for one of the diodes that is at an angle (the leads of the provided diodes are super thick and un-bendy). Sockets, resistors and diodes done. Trimmers and capacitors next. I’m having fun! #InTheLabDoingStuff #GuitarFX #Echoflanger #DandyHorse #ElectronicsKit #Soldering

A blue Dandy Horse guitar effect circuit board on my workbench. The chip sockets, resistors and diodes are already populated. Lots more to do still. There’s a pair of pliers and a pair of side cutters visible on the right side of the picture and an empty poly bag on the left side.

Had the pleasure to build out about 90% of the SkysEdge "Rotary UnSmart Phone" (RUSP) this weekend. Turns out I'm missing a uFL Coax Cable or I'd have finished it. Super fun project!
Head over to skysedge.com to learn more.

Basically it's a cell phone with an honest to goodness rotary dial that will essentially only make phone calls and not do all the other distraction crap that most portable electronics do these days.

I saved this from the trash! My friend was cleaning out his dad’s house and his comment was “Maybe if I played with this more, I’d be better at EE.” 😂 I mean, how can anyone resist the magical world of nor gates, flip-flops, transistors, and LEDs?!?! #vintageelectronics #electronicskit

A box containing a kit with a bright red cover and sweet old school tech “tron”-style font saying “200 in 1 Electronic Project Kit.”A detail of the red cover with a cartoon version of the kit with a face, legs, hands, and graduate cap saying “Come with me to the world of nor gates, flip-flops, transistors, and LEDs.”The inside of the kit - there are a bunch of individual thru hole resistors, capacitors, transistor, and ICs that are connected to small banana jacks, so you can use patch cord to wire up your own circuit.A detail of the transistors and resistors

Cast-in-Concrete Clock Upgraded After Thirteen Years

Proving that an old design cast in concrete can indeed be changed, [Hans Jørgen Grimstad] has revisited his Nixie clock from 2008, cleaned up the electronics and packaging, and turned it into a kit. Not that he has plans to enter the kit-making business, but he just thought it would be fun to learn how to make kits. In the video below the break, he's a bit embarrassed to reveal the inside of his first Nixie clock design, housed in a cast-concrete electronics enclosure. Although it still works, the internal wiring is a flaky, untidy, and perhaps a bit dangerous.

But [Hans] has improved his game over the years, making a number of different clock designs. The latest incarnation is pleasant to look at, built on a PCB which is visible inside a custom acrylic case. Three versions are available to support different types of tubes. The documentation he prepared for the project and the kit is very thorough. He walks you through the unboxing and assembly process in the videos below. Firmware is in C, and runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero W. If you are interesting in making electronics kits, [Hans]'s project would be a good example to follow.

All the necessary information to build the clock is published on the project's GitHub repository. If you're looking for enclosure ideas other than concrete or acrylic sheet, check out this write-up on hand-forging artistic Nixie clock enclosures.
