A few weeks ago, I gave my first demonstration for my mother's students - #EnPleinAir at that, eek! - painting in watercolour, directly, without drawing first. I've now added a bit of penwork, very loose, very scrappy. I'm planning to show them in class, to explain that penwork doesn't have to be precise. We've a couple of architects in the class, and they both say they want to loosen up, and they are both finding it Very Difficult.
I guess they're my students now, too.

I'm planning some #EnPleinAir #PaintingWithYarn and following the theme I thought a Derbyshire quarry might be a good subject. This is a #Millersdale Quarry (now a nature reserve) just off the #MonsalTrail I had a nosy around today as the morning light was good - some great shadows. A bit chilly to sit around today, but an option when the weather warms. NB #PhonePhotos so not brilliant!

Little sketch, done quickly. The stone is sandy yellow, the shadows purple to enhance the sense of a hot sunny day, and the water is rather turquoise.

🎨 Painting in my mini book with mini pallet. Quite a challenge to reduce the vista to such a tiny square. But I’m always up for a challenge. 🎨

☕️ finished the coffee sketch that I started yesterday. I truly love working on tinted paper with colour pencils. Also, when the view is uninspiring, I look at the details, like the wicker chairs ☕️

A town called Cochrane in Patagonia, Chile. A crossing, some ramshackle houses, a road sign, distant mountains. A rainy, overcast day. But still, lovely colours.

I love working with watercolours. I’m still honing my skills, but I’m confident it’ll come with time and practice.

This piece captures the last rays of sunlight on Vlieland—ghostly figures emerging around the fire house. It was a race against the light, so I had to paint quickly!

A loose watercolor illustration of a lighthouse. I painted it 'en plein air', on the Dutch island of Vlieland. The sun was setting swiftly, so I had to hurry.

For today's #ArtAdventCalendar, a very important little painting. This was painted #EnPleinAir, on the second day of a course in #PaletteKnife painting. The weather was closing in, and I had to paint fast to cover the canvas before the rain got to it. It's the best thing I did all week.

So I learnt that I have to work fast. By all means, look, think, try to be considered, but once the thinking is done, move fast.

I got sworn at by a squirrel, and it began to drizzle. But the sundial is instantly recognisable to one who knows it, and not so long ago, I wouldn't even have attempted it, especially on a day when my washes weren't drying!
