#EtaCarinae

I took this back on the 10th of March.

It is our old friend the Eta Carinae Nebula.

This time with a SII/OIII filter (thanks for the suggestion, @malcircuit !) and 120x90s@80 for the exposures. Then I ran it through the Dwarflab star removal tool, and post-processed the result in Snapseed.

I was not going to post it, but it came up as a background on my office screen today (long story), and I had not realised just how much detail it had.

A starless nebula, roughly divided in three by an inverted 'Y' of dust lanes. The centre is a blue green, fading to a pinky-orange around the edges.

Eta Carinae – HD 93308

What Caused Eta Carinae's 1840 "Great Eruption?"

In 1840, a seemingly innocuous star, Eta Carinae, suddenly brightened to become one of the brightest stars in the sky before slowly fading again. We now know that Eta Carinae is one of the most massive stars in the Milky Way, and this event - dubbed "the Great Eruption" - released 10 to 45 times the mass of the Sun into space. And yet, the star survived. What happened? The Chandra X-Ray Observatory has peered at the star and helped astronomers discover new details about the explosion and what might have led to this event.

30 zonsmassa)

@jeffzugale Eta Carinae (aka Eta Carina) is really beautiful… and also extremely dangerous if its final explosion was oriented towards the earth…

Meanwhile, you can view it through multiple wavelengths with Aladin Sky Atlas and Aladin Lite.
