The whole “people bought patterns and fabric and made their own clothes” has a lot of idealized past and propaganda to it, too.
People who could afford it have been buying clothing made by something else (and exploiting the ones actually working on it) for a very long time, but the act of making one's own clothing has been a form of virtue signalling at least since the times of Augustus' wife Livia (spoiler: she probably “made” the family clothing by overseeing a full vertically integrated workshop of slaves).
