I call this a "lite review" but it's totally my full review lol😂 But as always, my review will be on #storygraph.

I think The Subtweet was a really interesting book to read but might have been more enjoyable as a buddy read for discussion and analysis.

The History of Emily Montague by Frances Brooke is considered to be the first "Canadian" novel.

Frances Brooke (née Moore) wrote this love story, set in Canada, in Sillery (now Québec) not long after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, during the mid-1760s. The novel was published in England, though, and of course it pre-dates Confederation.

"I’d like to tell other women to take the leap. Jot down that idea. Write out a few paragraphs. Even if it’s rough and unpolished—just start. That’s the hardest part. There are resources to help with everything else, but believe in yourself and just start."

"Don't cut corners but you shouldn't even try to get it perfect. Perfection doesn't exist. Fail forward and grow. I know writing and publishing can feel scary, big, and overwhelming. But don't let it hold you back. Feel the fear and do it anyway."

"My insights seem a bit cliché, but find the story only you can tell and tell it in the way that only you can. Be weird. Be you. Whatever that looks like."

"Whatever is holding you back from publishing, let this vision take that anxieties place. Your words will provide some relief from the real world.

Write the book. Let nothing stop you. Because you never know who needs it."

@1sabelR If you like space opera: Bethany Jacobs' debut novel, These Burning Stars, is brilliant.

Kate Elliott is writing a gender swapped Alexander the Great space saga, it's very swashbuckling. First book is Unconquerable Sun.

Anxiously awaiting the 4th and final installment of Tamsyn Muir's Ninth House series. First book is Giden the Ninth. "Lesbian necromancers in space" doesn't do it justice, but it is true, so it makes a good hook.

Oh yeah, all of these are queer as hell.

In addition, here's a pretty big spreadsheet of space opera written by women. Once again I have forgotten its author's name, even though we've spoken several times. Sorry, I'll have to look it up.

(I like space opera a lot.)

Out of 241 recommended works for high school students studying German in Baden-Württemberg, 22 are written by women and 219 by men. That's less than ten percent.

Fancying a rewatch of #BBC 1999 #TV version of #ElizabethGaskell Wives and Daughters. We haven’t seen it since it first aired but have the #DVD, which I just pulled out of a precariously tall DVD pile in our sitting room! Looking forward to it.
