The entrance to the #FoxValleyMall in the far-west #Chicago suburb of #AuroraIllinois . Like many U.S. shopping malls, it was once a sprawling mass of indoor chain stores and the place where teens and adults would hang out. Now it has many empty shops.

Like many American malls, about half of the mall building has been demolished, and expensive "yuppie" apartment buildings have been built in that former section of the mall, with very little green space.

The city has worked hard to keep up and revitalize the remaining section of the mall. This large #mural portrays the icon of this part of #Illinois , called the #FoxValley.

The artist here has done an excellent job of designing the image so that it blends with its surroundings and looks like it's coming out of the raised garden bed in front of it. The swashes of blue are symbolic imagery of the Fox River. And the repeated pattern on the nearby backdropped wall to the left of the painting is also a series of foxes.

The artist's name is Kayla Newman. A link to a time-lapse video showing her painting the mural is in the comments below.

Entrance to a suburban Chicago shopping mall. In the forefront is a raised garden area. On the wall to the side of the entry door is a colorful mural of a red fox sitting and staring toward the viewer. He is portrayed sitting on a rocky area of ground above a flowing river. The other walls of the mall also have a "Fox" theme, with repetitive outlines of foxes on one section of the wall. Above the door, a sign reads, "Fox Valley Mall."

These far-west Chicago suburbs are Aurora and Naperville. They lie along the Fox River. The line of towns along the river are called the Fox Valley.

A pedestrian bridge swoops gracefully over the #FoxRiver in Aurora, Illinois (in the far suburbs of Chicago) during the very early sunrise hours on 16 Feb 2025.

A very purple-hued image, tinted from the colors of an early rising sun.

A frozen river is covered in snow, with the thin outline of city buildings visible across the far distance. A few open spots in the ice can be seen underneath a curved bridge. The bridge is held up by thick cement supports and very gently highlighted with regular small lights. It curves and swoops gracefully from the right side, and disappears into the city behind it. The bridge looks very large compared to the city, giving the illusion that it is incredibly long (it isn't).

An bright, eerie emerald glow hovers above a cityscape, with buildings along both sides of the Fox River and a bridge in the distance, whose lights reflect on the water.

I was surprised to get a mid-afternoon visit today from our one of our neighborhood #foxes (they're usually more nocturnal). The #RedFox stopped where we often feed the birds. I had thrown out some old bread for the birds to eat, but my fox friend found it first.

Once he realized we were discretely watching him, he reluctantly walked off without finishing his meal.🙁

The wide variety of animal prints🐾 in the snow are presumably from the nearby skunks, racoons, squirrels, rabbits, and opossums-- only a few of the indentations are from my small dog (who is about the same size as the fox), since she rarely walks in that area.

[The glass on the patio door is a bit dirty, so there are some spots in the original image.]

Others are probably from skunks, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, and opossums.

In America, pedestrians and #bicyclists both tend to (or at least should) keep to the right on the #BikePath, just like when they drive cars on the road.

I think it's confusing for some pedestrians, because they are supposed to be on the left on actual streets. (On roads with traffic and no cement sidewalks, pedestrians are supposed to walk against traffic on the side of the road, but there again... they don't always do that, either.)

With (faster) #ebikes becoming popular and folks riding them on #BikeTrails (often against trail rules and invariably far faster than anyone else on the trail is going), it feels like potential collisions & near-misses are getting to be more common.

(I ride on the #BikePaths in the far Chicago suburbs. Most of these were initially converted from old suburban railcar track lines. Much of it is long stretches with trees along both sides of the paths, or along the #FoxRiver.)

#RedFoxes outside my backyard fence this morning, A belated #SilentSunday on a Monday morning.

"The Three Mouse-keteers" are happily playing and catching #FieldMice. Last year, we only saw two #Foxes at a time, and I haven't seen any for a while now. Glad to see the local pest control patrol is still on the job.

Also happy to see them playing like happy puppies. They know they're safe and welcome in our neighborhood.

(Location: #AuroraIllinois USA, near #Chicago, population >200K. The open, mowed-grass area is officially for excessive #rainwater run-off, but is mostly used for kids & animals to run around & play.)

Just wanted to take a photo of the broken bridge at #FoxRiver, #Westcoast, but then a Kiwi guy and his son came up to me and said: Do you know about the cave on the other side of the bridge? We'll show you." And he insisted that I go to #Charleston beach. So I did. No regrets. 😍

Dear Kiwi guy, if you read this by any chance: thank you so much 🙏

@jovial_cynic you made me think of something I found during my #fishing expeditions. This pic is over a decade old. It's from an abandoned unfinished mansion at the time. It is only visible from the #FoxRiver and no other viewpoint.

I love it, to this day.

I've been making digital "large format" photos with a nodal point tripod head. This is made with 12 merged images. I think I could print this life-sized without losing much detail.
