Prairie driving: where in the winter, drivers shift to a 9-and-3 grip not for better control on slippery roads, but because those are the only spots on the steering wheel that are heated.

Snow comes "down" where you're from, not sideways? Interesting.

What's YOUR favourite thing about the prairie? Tell us in the comments, and check out some of ours: youtube.com/shorts/T0Tbwy57KvI

We were visiting our friends at
American Prairie in Montana this fall for the Great Plains Conservation Network steering committee meetings. We also have some incredible prairie landscapes here in Alberta that AWA is working hard to protect.

The sky is dark with thunderstorms. There is one slight hole in them which reveals the streaks of rain coming down and a possible slight clearing in the far distance. The field is dark gold and has long grass. A portion of the Sierra mountains is visible to the right. There are barbed wire fences with wooden fence posts. Carson Valley, Nevada

#BlueskyArtShow #Sky Big sky, big cloud, big downpour. Carson Valley and the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. #EastCoastKIn #Thunderstorm #Prairie #LandscapePhotography #SierraNevada

An open field in the foreground is dark due to a massive thunderstorm overhead. To the right you can just see the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains, but the tops are covered with thick clouds from which rain is falling. In the distance on the left, the cloud is a little thinner, so light is shining through and a lone ranch house is silhouetted against the rain. Streaks of rain come from above down to the ground. The Little Bluestem grass adds a lot of color to the fall and winter prairie. This stand of Little Bluestem is from seeds that I collected locally about 20 years ago.

Dried, reddish-orange grasses about 4 feet (1.2 m) tall growing beside a woven and barbed wire fence. The grass has white, fluffy tufts of seeds along the stems. On the left is a small shingle oak that has crossed the fence into the prairie area. (To be fair, the featured Little Bluestem grass has also crossed the fence into the pathway).Closer view of a single stem of Little Bluestem. A reddish stem with fluffy, feathery tufts of seeds. Woven wire fence in the background.

The dried little bluestem grass shows its best color on cloudy days.

The cat assumed it was a photoshoot for her portfolio. The second photo we’re calling: “The Fierce Predator Emerges from Her Leafy Lair”

The micro-prairie with two clumps of reddish little bluestem front and center. On the right is a taller clump of big bluestem. An orange and white cat has wandered into the frame.Closer view of the two clumps of reddish orange grass. The cat stands just outside the cave-like gap between the clumps. At the top are the dark brown seed clusters of Illinois bundle flower.

Happy Iowa wildflower Wednesdy!

Pretty sure James Enright set a new record for most photos in this essay covering his many visits to prairie remnants along the Glacial Trail Scenic Byway in northwest Iowa.

Hoping to get back to doing a #DailyWalk now that the garden and yard chores are pretty well done for the year. From today’s walk:

A plentiful crop of Osage oranges (hedge apples) on the grassy path beside a fence. The tree is visible above and beyond the red cedar on the left. The fuzzy seeds of little bluestem show up clearly against the reddish stems. The dark seed heads are tall bush clover. Down toward the ground are some dewberry plants with green leaves turning purple. The most vivid color I saw. These are the leaves of a black raspberry. They have turned a deep reddish-purple color.

I stopped my car after seeing a herd of cows and strolled along the side of the road at sunset. I was singing to these cows to get them both to look at me, trying to optimally position myself along the barbed wire fence to get the sun just above them. I definitely exposed for that sun, and I was fine with having a silhouette shot. There was some suspended dust from a gravel county road that was running behind them, which added some nice atmosphere. - Randall/Armstrong County line, Texas, USA #Sky #Sunset #cows #cattle #ranching #Texas #TexasPanhandle #sun #clouds #nature #animals #livestock #prairie #scenicsnature #outdoors #fall #autumn #Fujifilm #FujifilmXT5

An overly busy week at work has kept me from posting, but we did get out for a couple of nice hikes as fall colors continue their transition to winter austerity.

Here's a photo I particularly like of Tonttu investigating something in the tall Bluegrass prairie at the north end of Afton State Park.

#Huskies #Prairie #Bluegrass

A wide expanse of tall, reddish-beige bluegrass prairie grass covers most of the scene, with low hills and distant trees on the horizon. In the foreground, a husky is head-first into the grass, only his big, white curly tail an hind end standing out, the rest of him disappearing into the grass.

South Dakota serenity. The land stretches out beneath a masterpiece.

This image of the Badlands National Park in South Dakota, USA captures a vast, open landscape at sunset. It's a classic example of a prairie sunset, focusing on the dramatic interplay of light and clouds above the expansive horizon.
The upper two-thirds of the image is dominated by the sky, which features a spectacular blend of colors. There are streaks of orange, pink, and yellow near the horizon where the sun is setting, blending into softer blues and purples higher up. The light catches the underside of scattered cumulus clouds, making them glow with warm color.
The foreground is a rolling grassland or prairie, covered in dry, golden-brown grasses, suggesting a late summer setting, in a generally arid environment. The terrain looks somewhat rugged, with some dips and low hills.
The overall mood is serene, expansive, and tranquil, emphasizing the grandeur of the open sky and the peacefulness of the remote landscape.
