The Sinking City Remastered Announced for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC

I just backed Sinking City 2 on Kickstarter!

It is a 3rd person, lovecraftian action horror game made and published by Frogwares. They're a Ukrainian company still in Ukraine. I am not a huge fan of horror games, but I'll back anything they do.

The first one's controls were a bit iffy with it's shooting, and I don't think it was all intentionally bad like some horror games do. But they've switched to UE5, and added "action" to the description, so I'm hoping its more solid.

Just a word of warning there's both fish people racism and non-fish people racism in it. They say its a part of the setting and the times and would rather comment on it than ignore it. Also, if this one is like Sherlock Holmes: The Awakening, they also had a blurb telling Russia to go fuck themselves. Or something like that.

The Mystery of the Mummy PC Review

Hello and welcome back to Retro Freak Reviews. Today we’re going to take a look at a game featuring the world’s greatest detective. No, I’m not talking about Batman, or Poirot, or Miss Marple, or Columbo. I’m talking about the one and only Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy is an adventure game developed by the Ukrainian studio Frogwares and originally released in 2002 for Windows by Wanadoo Edition. In 2009, it was ported to the Nintendo DS by Mystic Software and Focus Home Interactive.

Frogwares was founded in 2000, and it was initially made up of six people. It quickly specialized in developing casual adventure games, with Mystery of the Mummy being their first title.

But before we continue, let’s look at the covers:

This is the US/Canadian cover and it’s my favourite one with an etching of the Eye of Ra and a picture of Sherlock Holmes below. It definitely conveys an Egyptian theme.

The EU cover isn’t so good in my opinion:

This one features a winged scarab and it would be a great cover if it weren’t so dark (or it’s a shiny cover).

All other PC covers are variations of these 2 covers but the Nintendo DS cover is a bit different:

This cover focus more on Sherlock Holmes than on the Egyptian imagery. Still, it’s a nice cover.

Well, the game’s afoot (and so is this review):

https://youtu.be/_JICb0S4eNA

NOTE: This game was played on a Steam Deck, which influenced my experience.

The game starts in the main menu, which has several icons (save, load, start game, etc.). If you click on Start Game, it loads a cutscene where Sherlock Holmes is on a carriage, reading a letter from Elizabeth Montcalfe who requests Sherlock’s aid in finding her missing father. The carriage takes Sherlock to Lord Montcalfe’s mansion to look for clues.

The game starts properly when Sherlock arrives at the Montcalfe Mansion, where we see that the game is a set of pre-rendered 3D pictures in a 1st person perspective with a 360º view. There’s also a bag in the left corner representing the inventory and next to it, a notebook which accesses the main menu where you can save, load, and read all the letters and notes you collect throughout the playthrough.

At the foyer.

You control the cursor with your mouse, and it changes its icon when you find a hotspot which can be clicked on, either to use something, to grab an object, or to move about in the mansion. All objects you grab are stored in your inventory, which you can access and use on the appropriate hotspot.

The main view is comprised only of pre-rendered pictures and there’s no animation when moving around, but there are some CGI cutscenes either during some of the puzzle solving or between levels where we see Sherlock performing some action or accessing a new area.

The puzzles start fairly easy with lots of hints, but starting from the 3rd level onward, they increasingly get harder and harder. There are two types of puzzles: the typical adventure puzzle, where you use objects to solve it, and logic puzzles, like sliding tiles. The latter are the hardest puzzles in the game, with the latest one being absolutely brutal, not to mention the timed sections. And also there are no other solutions to the puzzles.

Part of Lord Montcalfe’s extensive Egyptian collection.

The game is divided into 5 levels, and in those levels, you need to grab several objects and use them to solve puzzles and/or to acquire more objects. Almost every object only has one use, and some can be joined into new objects. They don’t carry from one level to another and I’ve only found one red herring so far.

And a lot of the objects are obscured in the background, coupled with some of the hotspots being only active at certain angles, which leads to a lot of pixel-hunting, unfortunately. But the fact that the objects don’t carry over from one level to another prevents some backtracking.

As seen in the video and images, the Montcalfe Mansion is filled with Ancient Egypt exhibits, and almost every puzzle shares that theme, which makes me wonder if Frogwares was originally planning a game set in Ancient Egypt before deciding to include Sherlock Holmes.

The world’s greatest detective, ladies and gentlemen!

In fact, the presence of Sherlock Holmes felt odd throughout the gameplay, as the game could perfectly use any other protagonist and it wouldn’t have any impact on the story or gameplay. Only the ending felt like a proper Sherlock moment as he unravels the mystery and deduces the identity of the culprit.

The game’s plot unfolds throughout the gameplay as you’ll find hints and clues to Lord Montcalfe’s fate and his family’s role in it, as Holmes finds out he’s not alone in the mansion. The most keen players will get a good idea of what’s going on before the end. But the journey is better than the destination as the answers to the mystery felt underwhelming compared with the journey to get said answers.

Quickly, grab a cat!

Now, onto the technical aspects:

The pre-rendered graphics do look nice, but I’ve found the animation stiff, and the character models a bit lacklustre. Sherlock’s model is slightly inspired by Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of the character. Also, I wish there was some animation when moving around the mansion, but I did enjoy the 360º view perspective.

The sound effects, while not abundant, were adequate, and the music was relaxing, with the jazzy tunes during the gameplay providing a good atmosphere. Yet, the English voice acting was average at best (I didn’t choose any other available language).

The controls were another story when playing on a Steam Deck. I used the trackpads to control the mouse cursor and it felt more or less responsive, and although using a mouse felt better, it was more sensitive until I reduced its DPI. I didn’t try the touchscreen, though.

Let me know if you can actually see the object you’re suppose to grab.

So, in conclusion, The Mystery of the Mummy is an average adventure game with a lot of pixel-hunting, some backtracking, average graphics, animation and VA, but with a solid story (although I didn’t care much about the mystery) and a good difficulty progression from moderate to hard. If you’re a fan of mystery, logic puzzles, and Sherlock Holmes, then you should give it a shot.

You can get it here on Steam for free. But I couldn’t play it on my Windows 10 PC, which prompted me to play it on my Steam Deck, and apart from some crashes here and there, it’s possible to play it from start to finish.

Sherlock arriving at the library.

The Mystery of the Mummy became an unexpected hit for Frogwares, and after some legal issues with its distributors, it spawned a series that continues to the current day.

The Nintendo DS port can be considered almost a remaster, with a reworked UI which simplifies the gameplay and the puzzle-solving, but it maintains the same animation and voice acting. Personally, I prefer it over the PC version.

Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed the review, and unfortunately, this’ll be the last review of the year. I’m planning to cover some requests for next year, but next review will be at the start of the new year and we’ll take it to the skies. So, until then, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and keep on playing.

I've been looking at all the indie games on sale...then remembered we might be striking in a few weeks.

Guess I should save that $35. Already spent $8.

Spent:
Celeste by Extremely OK Games
Vandals by Arte

Will probably wait for.
Sherlock Holmes: Crime & Punishment (and DLC? or another game?) by Frogwares
Tomb Raider I - III Remake by Ubisoft

Okay, the last one isn't indie, but it'll also probably go cheaper.
