Unusual double-cover on golden-age Detective Comics โ„– 99 (1945).

I'd better fix this... ๐Ÿคจ The inner cover didn't get our store stamp! ๐Ÿ˜‰

A photo of a Golden-Age comic to which two covers were attached during binding. The outer cover is arched to expose a portion of the identical cover underneath.

The cover is light blue. A dark blue top border contains the words, "No. 99 May...Ten Cents." In the top left corner is a small circular bust of Batman with a green background and a small banner with his name. In the top right corner is a small white circle with another inside. The border reads, "Detective Comics," with "DC" in the inner circle. A large yellow banner with black edges and red lettering makes up the top third of the cover, proclaiming "Detective Comics." Below this is an illustration of Batman and Robin spinning The Penguin around inside one of his own trick umbrellas. Near the handle of the umbrella is a store-stamp, that reads "Bonnett's, Ohio's Largest Dealers in Back-Issue Magazines," arranged in three lines.

By request, a little flashback to a 1966 newspaper article about the shop. This story mentions Dad (Walter Bonnett) too, so โ€“ early Happy Father's Day!

"Harold Bonnett Displays Collector's Items.
... Prices of original comic books up in the sky, too."
A black and white photo of my grandfather in front of a rack of paperbacks in our family shop, Bonnett's Bookstore. He's holding four old comics fanned out. The comics are: BAT MAN โ„– 1, SUPERMAN โ„– 1, FLASH COMICS โ„– 1, & WALT DISNEY COMICS and Stories โ„– 1.[article text carefully edited for length]

"10 Cents Worth Of Batman Will Bring You $75 Now" by Tim Bleck, Journal Herald staff Writer.

Look. Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. It's the price of old comic books.

For the price of a small set of encyclopedias you can purchase the 26-year-old original version -volume I, number one of the adventures of Batman at Bonnett's book store, 502 East Fifth street.

Well, maybe you can. "We don't really want to sell it," said Walter Bonnett, son of proprietor Harold Bonneft.

They have a volume I, number one of "The Complete Story of the Daring Exploits of the One and Only Superman," too. That dates to 1939 and sells for $60. The original Walt Disney comic (1940), with Donald Duck on the cover, is available for $30.

"We've got quite a few $10 ones. That's about as much as most people will go," said Harold Bonnett.

"I've been here over 30 years and built up quite a collection. This comic book collection craze started about 10 years ago, I guess."

When his son returned from the service a year ago, he began exploring his father's gold mine and answering the requests, mostly from out of town, from collectors.

"Right now the hot thing is Marvel Comics" said Harold. "This is the age of super-heroes I guess. And Marvel has them-the Fantastic Four, Thor and Captain America.

It's H. O. T. But, it's worse for Hot Stuff, the Little Devil. This book is in rough shape, on the outside. Not surprisingly, no one bought it during Gem City Comic Con. Issue 2 from 1957 is still a good reader, and not easy to find!

Subject: A rough copy of "Hot Stuff the Little Devil" issue number 2, from Harvey Comics, dated December 1957.

Hot Stuff is trying to eat an ice cream cone, but he stares at an empty, dripping cone in his hand, because, off course, the ice cream has sizzled away, the melt leaving a colorful trail on the ground.

This comic is well read showing multiple creases and has significant foxing along the bottom edge with reading stains along the open edge. The spine is intact but quite frayed. All open cover edges have numerous tiny tears, with 2 larger ยฝ" folded tears on the top edge near the spine.

Presentation: This trimmed digital photo is squarely overlayed on a square-cropped, blurred, and darkened image of itself.
