#Gridfinity

@pixelpusher Here's the "final"* iteration of the support block design. It has spring-loaded wings that clamp it in place against the part it supports. Before the wings, the blocks slid around and the hole perimeters misaligned.

The space between the wings is 0.4mm too small. I have to bend it pretty hard to clip it on, but nothing's come off the bed yet.

* final in that I've used them to print 6 of the 12 pieces I need.

Two large 3D printed PLA parts are on the printer bed, partially printed. Each has a 13mm wide channel with a PETG support block inserted. The support block has serif-like wings at each end that press firmly against the PLA.The printer is in the process of depositing the next layer of PLA onto a PETG support block. On the support, there are two holes' perimeters, not attached to any other PLA , and elsewhere there are bridges across the blocks. The print head is moving so fast it is a blur.

Who's got two thumbs* and one ALEX drawer that opens 100%? Thanks to @pixelpusher for the brilliant idea; I just refined it a little.

I will put the files up on Printables eventually, after I modify the other five drawers.

* Rhetorical question. I know that the opposable thumb "theory" is woke nonsense.

For now, I’m printing 2 generic 1x3 #gridfinity bins to hold 2 #raspberrypi longways while plugged in, but later maybe I can try doing something slightly more custom that will fit better.

haven’t seen anything on makerworld/printables yet that looks like what I’m imagining.

Another free #Gridfinity bin for your office desk published.

Gridfinity 2x2 bin for basic stapleless-stapler, with SourceCode for #OpenSCAD

You can find these, and many other staplers that can be used without consumables online.

A 2x2 Gridfinity raster units sized bin, only 2 height units flat. Inside is a paper stapler with an odd shape that is nicely cut out from the bin so it stays put securely on your desk. The bright yellow stapler will staple multiple pages without any consumable metal staples.

I've tried using the Gridfinity addon for #FreeCAD recently, and it's super useful! However, I have a small problem in that the tolerances are so tight that I have to really force the resulting prints into the base plates.

Is there some setting I can adjust in the addon to make the tolerances a bit looser?

I think it's finally time to admit it - I'm a gridfinity printing addict (this is only a small portion of what I've done so far). I only wish I had found out about them earlier, they're so nice for organizing things. I still have a ton of enclosures to print before my work area is complete, but it's already making a huge difference! Anyone else gone all in on the gridfinity system? Any suggested enclosure types?

Additionally, because the bins you put in are standard #Gridfinity bins, they can go off and be useful elsewhere if you decide you want something different in your drawers.

I just used another #OpenScad model to generate the bins with dividers or not.

Seriously thinking about printing more of these for our workbenches.

What's not obvious is that these are designed so that the drawer is actually just a grid, that you can put ANY #Gridfinity bins into. There's nothing special about it.

This is annoying in that it means you have to print a minimum of 3 pieces to have a functional drawer: a shell for the drawer to go in, the drawer grid+handle, and whatever bin(s) you want to put in it.

But AWESOME in that you can put whatever works for you in there & change it up later.

For anyone curious how those 3D printed #Gridfinity drawers came out…

The only thing I don’t like about these is that they do not have any stops to prevent things from becoming unaligned front to back. I would also like to see a small stop to prevent the door from coming all the way out without a special motion.

Two photos of 3D printed drawers.

There are 4 drawers with faces that are either bright pink or neon green. They look like something you’d find in a little girl’s room.

There are two levels of drawers. All the drawers are one grid high. On the left is a two grid wide drawer. On the right is a four grid wide drawer. All the drawers are five grids deep.

In the top photo all the doors are closed. In the bottom photo, they are all pulled out a little and you can see a wide variety of divided inserts.

There is a fidget spinner on the desk in front of it. On top of the four by five drawers are two of my 3D printed stands for the reMarkable tabletA close-up of the shelf on the 4 x 5 drawers with the tablet stands removed. You can see an Open grid Finity grid as well as three practice juggling sacks.A larger version of the top image in the first photo.

#Gridfinity isn't the greatest modular system, but it's good, and it has a ridiculously large ecosystem of things that have already been created for it.

#Multiboard multiboard.io/ is cool, and has a big following, but just ignores gridfinity's existence.

#OpenGrid opengrid.world/ also has some cool innovations, but it's only kinda-sorta compatible with an adapter and some caveats.

Needed some small drawers to organize my desk. My printer is now churning out drawers using this parameterized #OpenScad design github.com/smkent/modular-draw

I mention this because I was once again faced with the maddening fact that people keep designing cool "modular grid" systems, that seem needlessly incompatible with #gridfinity stuff. Mostly because the creator made a grid that was almost, but not quite the same size for no obvious reason.

The tool wall is finished! IKEA BESTÃ…, SKÃ…DIS, UPPDATERA, and a whole lot of 3D modeling and printing.

I bought the furniture last November. I built the furniture in December. I spent the next six months modeling the custom hangers, and today I published all the 3D printed parts to Printables. Done done. Hooray!

🧵 18/N

A tall cabinet is composed of two IKEA BESTÃ… bottom and two top cabinets with glass doors. Things are vaguely visible through the doors. The bottom cabinets have an oak top. Above that, there are two IKEA SKÃ…DIS pegboards. The pegboards have a bunch of tools and things hanging from them. The top cabinets have an open shelf below the doors, and each shelf holds 7 rolls of 3D printer filament in carboard boxes. A 3D printer enclosure is to the right, mostly out of frame. The same IKEA BESTÃ… cabinets and SKÃ…DIS pegboards as before. Now the glass doors are all open. The bottom cabinets are full of IKEA UPPDATERA bins. The top cabinets have smaller UPPDATERA bins on the top shelf and an assortment of cardboard boxes on the lower shelf.A close-up shows just the IKEA SKÃ…DIS pegboard. It has all the attachments described in this thread plus a few more. On the tabletop below there is a carved wooden block and a printed air quality meter.

And here are some Gridfinity baseplates and driver bit bins for the tool wall. It's hard to tell from the photos, but the baseplates are tilted forward. These bits are from three sets, plus some more I got as singletons. They include a lot I won't use often (ever), but I've also got the ones I need.

These baseplates use the three piece assembly mechanism that I showed upthread in 🧵 10 and 🧵 11.

Seven 3D printed Gridfinity baseplates, a mix of three by one and four by one, are hanging from a SKÃ…DIS pegboard. Each has one or two shallow bins containing metal screwdriver bits. Each bin has a colored icon showing the kind of bit it holds (Phillips, Hex, Torx, etc.)The same 3D printed Gridfinity baseplates are hanging from the SKÃ…DIS pegboard. Now the bins are on the shelf below. The empty baseplates have magnets in the corners of each grid unit, and gold highlights around the perimeter.

After more than a year of being busy with my robot, I am back at making some models. A simple to begin with: handles for a gridfinity baseplate tray to easily move many bins around.

I made it available here: printables.com/model/1349687-g
