Over Labor Day weekend, 5,500 grocery workers in Portland went on strike across two unions: the independent New Seasons Labor Union (pictured), which is seeking a first contract at a local natural foods chain, and UFCW Local 555 at Fred Meyer, a supermarket-department store chain owned by the corporate giant Kroger.
