Are you traveling this holiday season? ✈️🚗🧳 Bring your sewing with you!

We know, holiday visits are usually pretty busy. But if you can squeeze a little bit of sewing in during the quieter moments, it might make the difference between frazzled and festive. Sewing is such a nice brain reset. Here are a few ideas for bringing your sewing along with you:

🪡 Hand sewing takes up a lot less space than machine sewing. Do some hand finishing on a garment - or do some of the construction steps by hand! It can really improve your skills.

🪡 Embellish your me-mades or thrift finds with hand embroidery.

🪡 Try out a new hand sewing technique like applique or hexie quilting.

🪡 Bring your machine along and work on whatever makes your heart sing.

We have a bunch more tips and ideas in Episode 234: Sewing and Travel! (Not to be confused with Episode 273: Sewing FOR Travel, which is about sewing clothes, bags, and accessories BEFORE a trip. 😂)

Socks - again.

But they are a bit special in that it's a yarn that has been sitting in my stash for maybe 20 years. According to the manufacturer this colorway was produced around 2001 ...

It was still in pretty good condition so I'm looking forward to wearing them for a long time (Opal is rather sturdy yarn).

Pattern is a simple combo of brioche st and purl background over a little more than half of the front st.

Yarn is in shades of purple, brown, yellow, white and a bit of turquoise, making a stripy pattern.

Along the leg and foot is a panel with a lengthwise texture, the rest is in plain stockinette.

Did I ever post a "finished" picture of this cardigan?

It's the same yarn I asked about here troet.cafe/@FanCityKnits/11561

Technically it's not finished in this picture, but that's the best picture I'll get. Ends are sewn in and buttons added and it's a perfect fit. Probably best fit I've ever reached for my partner after knitting for him for close to 30 years 😆 It will be my prototype from now on. (He gets a cardi every 2 years or so)

More socks - but I think I'm getting near the end of the streak ...

This yarn is 100% Southdown, an extremely short stapled fiber, very "spongy", interesting to knit with. But it's properties make it allegedly very suitable for socks. We will see, how they hold up.

The pattern I used is called "Burning Love / Brennende Liab" with my standard heel and toe.

Finally started the quilting on the coat I've been working on for a very long time now. This whole process has been so slow and I want to be wearing it already.

I'm using the Cris Wood Sews throw jacket pattern, with a lining and a very thin, very warm wool batting.

Linen for the exterior is thrifted, dyed by me with indigo, various tannins, and a little bit of rust. Quilted with cotton sashiko thread also dyed with indigo.

More socks - #sockknitting is still going strong over here.

With this pair I'm really curious, how well they stand up to wear and wash as they are 100% Peruvian highland wool. It was advertised as sock yarn and the vendor told me that she uses it herself with no problems so I decided to give it a try.

The pattern is a simple texture: k3, p1 for 3 rounds, p all for one round. Heel and toe are my standard versions.

#Socktober socks pair 3 finished just in time.

The yarn looks and feels very nice, I really do hope it holds up to wear and washing on a regular basis.

Pattern is "Wood Nymph Socks", a free pattern on Ravelry

I switched out heel and toe for my preferred variants and I made the stitch pattern one stitch wider so the purl stitch from the cuff did line up with the pattern.

New sweater! (New = finished months ago, finally blocked). It's a mix of handspun yarns and unraveled thrifted sweaters.

Loosely based on the Matagui cardigan by Maysa Tomikawa, with a bunch of gauge tweaking & general ignoring of instructions.

Colour blocking on the back was inspired by a white and gold sweater I spotted in one of those youtube Tokyo walkabout videos I'm addicted to.

It's so! wide! because I'm an old lady in my caftan phase.

#Socktober part two.

A pretty simple stitch pattern, a really nice yarn (75% merino, 25% nylon), that feels rather substantial and is pretty different from the usual sock yarns, very matte.

I'm curious, how well it will stand up to use and washing.

A pair of hand-knit socks. One is on a mannequin foot, the other is just laid out next to it.

Colors are shades of olive green, light brown, blue, orange, purple, yellow. It was dyed in medium short length, so each color covers a few stitches, creating a sideways striped fabric.

Texture looks a bit like a basket weave with tiny holes at the corners.

I still owe the finished picture if my #Socktober socks - 2 pairs are done and a third already cast on

The first finished pair

A handdyed blend of 75% wool, 25% nylon, but the wool is #BFL or Bluefaced Leicester. I like that breed for spinning, as it's nearly as soft as merino, but with a longer staple and because of that it has a bit more luster and is a bit sturdier. In theory. But you don't find much yarn made from it

#WIPWednesday, #socktober edition: both more and less progress than it looks. Both were completed as far as the left leg is, which you can see is too slouchy. I ripped the right one back to row 80 (4 stripes from the rib) and stepped up the decreases. Much better! But the other sock will need the same. Sock on the right is now in a 2-stripe straightaway for the calf and then will have a sudden dramatic decrease to regular sock size. After that it's smooth sailing.

I don't even remember when I started this process anymore, but one side of my embroidered dress is done. Turns out black on black is a real strain on the eyes. 🙈

I'm not sure I made the best choice with this stitch, either. I might have to redo it at some point.

Viscose blouse.

Made inspired by a RTW blouse from a brand I like, it came out very close to the inspo's shape!

Pattern for the main body is Helsinki by Les Lubies de Cadia, butterfly sleeves taken from a pattern by Finnish indie brand Jujuna. (I got them with a sewing magazine subscription that shared the pattern, SK 5/24)
Main fabric is second hand, collar facing bought new. Both viscose.

You can see a brief making of -video of this blouse on my YouTube channel, link to linktree in my profile, or go to https://youtu.be/LgRQdaAIPag

It's time to bring out fingerless mitts. I'm usually not cold. Only my fingers when I'm working at the computer have a tendency to need a bit of extra warmth.

These mitts are probably the finest thing I've ever knit - 2.0 mm needles and a gauge of 40 sets / 10 cm in stockinette. The yarn is a merino silk blend that runs 1.340 m / 100 g

@knitting @fiberarts #knitting #HandmadeWardrobe #fiberarts #slowfashion

A hand clad with a fingerless mitt, backside of the hand is visible.

The mitt is made from green brown, very fine yarn. The yarn produces rather wide stripes with no discernible repetitive pattern in several shades of olive, moss and dark green and some brown.

The texture of the fabric is lacy, lengthwise stripes.Same hand, this time turned up so the palm is visible. It's in stockinette stitch.
I made pants! They're made of proper trouser fabric that I'd bought thinking I'd be able to make a pair of semi-tailored trousers with a fly front.

That never happened, so now they're elastic waist pants. The pattern I used is the same as the checkered trousers I've shared before, but I added pleats, back pockets and added elastic only for the back.

#FinishOrFrogAlong

Halfway there - sock 1 finished, the second one is cast on, but only a few rounds long.

There's several hours of car ride ahead today, should get me through most of the leg.

One hand-knit sock on a grey background.

The such is textured and the color slowly goes from dark purple to dark wine red, all shades in between are not solid, so it is very variated in color

I've been working on a dress! It's ready enough that I just need to add buttons + buttonholes, so it should only take me about 6 business months.

I'm happy the vest works with this blouse, it's what I had in mind when making it!
