For the last few years, we obsessed over whether AI could do the thing. 2026 is when the grown-up questions take over:
・ How well does it actually work?
・ What does it really cost?
・ And who benefits when the hype fades?
The shift is overdue. Expect fewer jaw-dropping demos and more uncomfortable audits of where AI truly boosts productivity and where it mostly boosts slide decks. Geopolitics will stop being a footnote and start shaping the stack. More countries will demand that their data, models, and compute stay on home soil. “Global by default” will quietly disappear. In science and medicine, the mood changes from wow to why. Getting the right answer is no longer enough. If a model is correct, people will want to know what inside it did the work. And in law and other high-stakes domains, the winners will not be the flashiest tools. They will be the ones that survive domain-specific scrutiny and function inside real workflows, not just pristine demos.
The AI era is not ending.

I don’t know if you’re a masochist^Wfan of a 19,000-word Ed Zitron rant, but if you are, this is a good read.
Ed’s framing of the present-day stock hype cycle as “enshittification of shareholders” is pretty apt. Analysts are incentivized to *sell stock*, not provide a reporting of things as they are. As a result, they become complicit in risk-laundering, causing stock prices to go ever higher, and putting shareholders (that’s you and me) at higher risk than we realize.
Although this seems to be a market-wide problem, nowhere is it worse than in the AI industry. The article claims that the valuations of AI companies are based on future promises of revenue in a way that is *way* beyond the norm; the odds that all of these promises come to pass is basically zero, and the odds that many, MANY dominos fall when only a few of those promises fail to deliver is quite high; and the time of reckoning for those promises is nigh: probably starting in 2026.

I was not expecting this to happen so quickly, but the fact that the sources used to train LLMs are drying up is likely going to kill these models within a few years.
Last month, I had to upgrade a project to Tailwind 4 and design SDCs in Drupal. LLMs kept mixing up Tailwind 4 and Tailwind 3 documentations, making me waste 4-5h compared to mere documentation reading. As for SDCs, the official doc is rather sparse, and the LLM was completely unable to help. That's good news!

Imagínense la cantidad de plata que la IA le está generando a (algunas) empresas, que están dispuestas a poner la cabeza en la guillotina, a pesar de que nadie la pidió, nadie la quiere y a nadie le sirve en todos los lugares donde la quieren poner.
Si no miren a Microsoft y su apuesta ciega por la IA dentro de Windows y probablemente el éxodo más masivo de sus usuarios que yo tenga memoria y la publicidad negativa que que eso está generando.
Muchas veces lxs boludos de a pié como nosotrxs pensamos "¡pero cómo no se dan cuenta!", "¡no pueden ser tan idiotas!", y mientras tanto las corpos levantan paladas y paladas de plata y se nos cagan de risa en la cara.
La IA les está generando guita, y va a seguir haciéndolo, independientemente de que sea una burbuja o no.
La plata no la genera la IA, la genera, como siempre, los petabytes de datos y metadatos recolectados de nosotrxs, las ovejas.
Mientras exista la posibilidad de hacer plata, sea por inversión y ganancias generadas, o por hype e inversiones fantasmas, van a exprimir la situación al máximo y durante todo el tiempo que les sea redituable, a cualquier precio.
Esta gente no se hizo multimillonaria siendo pelotuda.

My message for the new year around GenAI, don't believe the hype about AGI, it taking large number over jobs, replacing humans etcetera.
It also makes mistakes, hallucinates and you should check every outcome you re-use. At the same also don't believe the hype about GenAI being worthless, awful, bad, only being a stochastic parrot. That simply isn't true as anyone who regularly uses topmodels knows.
