(2/2) “Same Place, Different Universe” #Webnovel Chapter 9
The other two illustrations for this chapter; I had plans for an #Illustration for the scene at the beginning of the chapter, but I already spent so much time on these ones that I skipped it due to time 😔
Auriga’s outfit in The Defenestrators is based on punk fashion with military elements, but within the context of the setting: the military elements are the pieces of armor. I struggled so much with what team she’d be in.
There were many possibilities that would’ve worked, but I ultimately decided that she returned to The Defenestrators. My decision was influenced by me wanting to balance out the team’s line-up more by having 2 former(?) CC members instead of just one. Story-wise, it’s also to show that this team successfully made amends with at least one of its members that previously left it on not so good terms, but not all of them.
Lorraine’s outfit is based on 80’s glam punk, and Wolfgang’s is based on 18th century menswear. This illustration took the longest because of the lighting effects and I tried my best to get them how I intended when I’m just working with a trackpad so I did those effects in Inkscape as much as I could.
Aside from the backgrounds, these were all #VectorArt! The illustration of Lorraine and Wolfgang has additional color lighting effects which I applied with vectors like this after the shading was finished:
*Select the base path and the shadow path on it
*Duplicate both paths
*Use the Difference Boolean Operation to subtract the duplicated shadow path from the duplicated base path
*Paste the style of the lighting onto the remaining path and set its blend mode to Soft Light
*Lower the shape layer until it’s where it should be
This process is a lot more efficient than what I used to do for color lighting 🥲
In this chapter I didn’t expect to spend so much time writing out how a TV commercial goes, but it was part of introducing these characters. The chapter ends by playing a bit more of the recording that Marcia found, which reveals another surprise…
